Title: Database Engineer

Location: Remote Canada

Reports to: Manager, Database Engineering

Position Overview:

As a part of the Database Engineering team, the Intermediate DBA will work closely with Engineering, Operations and Stakeholders on scripting, testing and deploying database objects, designing and maintaining ETL solutions, troubleshooting incidents and taking proactive steps to mitigate issues from happening again in future. In this role, Intermediate DBA is expected to take ownership of database infrastructure, while leading regular maintenance activities like patching, version testing and upgrades, setting up monitoring and alerting, disaster recovery strategies, and performance tuning.

We are looking for a DBA who has strong skills with SQL Server database systems on Window based environments. Experience with NoSQL databases would be a plus. The Intermediate DBA should be available to participate in after-hours on-call rotation.

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensure that database systems are available, secure, patched and upgraded to at least "N-1" version.
• Work with Development resources in partnership to script, test, and implement database solutions (e.g., queries, views, stored procedures, functions, triggers etc.) according to the best standards.
• Design and maintain data pipelines while leveraging appropriate tools (e.g., SSIS, bash scripting, SQL Agent jobs, replication, clustering, snapshots, backup/restore, etc.).
• Coordinate physical (i.e., modifications made to the storage structures, hardware, or configuration of the database system) and logical (i.e., modifications made to the structure, schema, or organization of the data) changes to relational and non-relational database systems.
• Control and enforce segregation of user access to database systems.
• Track and document work progress with ticketing tools.
• Interact with Engineering and Operations to effectively explore, POC and implement new database designs as per project requirements.
• Actively participate in team cross-training that helps with detecting and eliminating isolated knowledge silos or undocumented procedures.
• Be available for after-hours on-call rotation. Typical schedule may look like this: once a month for a week, 24/7; however, more frequent rotation may be required based on business needs.

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

• A degree or diploma in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent studies.
• 4 to 5 years' experience in relational database technologies (e.g., MS SQL Server, MySQL, Postgres, Oracle), with minimum 3 years working with MS SQL Server, SSIS and SSRS.
• Familiarity with non-relational databases (e.g., Cassandra, MongoDB) will be a plus.
• Demonstrable expertise with database engine performance tuning and query optimization.
• Working knowledge of HA and DR best practices for on-prem and cloud database systems (e.g., AlwaysON, replication, backup/restore, etc.).
• Experience with developing stored procedures/queries/triggers/views MS SQL Server and RDS for SQL Server.
• Experience with AlwaysON Availability Group (AOAG) setup, maintenance and troubleshooting. Knowledge of Distributed AOAG is a plus.
• Expertise with Windows OS, Failover Cluster Manager, Event logs; Linux OS is a plus.
• Knowledge of AWS solutions like EC2, RDS is a must.
• Confident user of Grafana, Prometheus, AlertManager, AWS monitoring. Experience building useful Grafana dashboards is a plus.
• Knowledge of development processes, tools and technologies.
• Bonus points for working knowledge of automation and configuration management tools (GIT, Ansible).
• Experience working with incident and ticketing tools (i.e. JIRA, ServiceNow)
