The Centre for Innovation (C4I) at Medicine Hat College (MHC) is pleased to offer a Student Research Assistant position focused on defence innovation and policy analysis. We invite current students enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary institution who are motivated, analytical, and interested in defence, public policy, and innovation ecosystems to apply. As the Student Research Assistant, you will conduct a comprehensive review of industry hubs located near defence bases across Canada and allied countries. Your work will support the development of policy recommendations aimed at accelerating innovation and improving procurement processes within the defence sector.
A little about the role:- Research and map innovation hubs and industry clusters located near Canadian and allied defence bases.
- Conduct literature reviews and policy scans to identify best practices in defence innovation and procurement.
- Analyze the relationship between regional innovation ecosystems and defence readiness.
- Develop policy recommendations to support faster procurement and increased innovation uptake.
- Prepare briefing notes and contribute to a final report summarizing findings and recommendations.
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to applied policy research with real-world implications for national security, innovation, and economic development.
Details:As a successful applicant you'll have:
- A strong interest in defence policy, innovation systems, and public sector strategy.
- Excellent research and analytical skills.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- A background or strong interest in Political Science, Public Policy, Economics, Innovation Studies, or related fields.
Terms of Employment
Terms of Employment: October 27, 2025 – December 12,2025, January 5, 2026 – March 27, 2026, May 11, 2026 – August 14, 2026
Hours of Work: 10 hours per week (October – March), Full time (May- August)
Wage Rate: $20.00 per hour
