Job Summary:

This new position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal and provincial tax regulations related to payroll and production incentives. This role involves strategic oversight of payroll tax/remittances operations, managing tax filings, agency audits, and collaborating with internal departments to ensure accurate and timely tax reporting. The ideal candidate will have advance knowledge in payroll tax laws, strong leadership skills, and experience in high-volume payroll environments. In addition, the position will include leadership of the Vancouver office to ensure staff from all departments at this location are supported.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure compliance with all payroll-related tax laws and regulations, including but not limited to all CRA/MRQ remittances and preparation and submission of payroll tax filings, taxation of non-residents (Reg 102 and Part XIII tax), yearly PIER reviews
  2. Authorized representative on all tax accounts; primary CRA/MRQ contact; resolves all matters with tax authorities
  3. Oversee year end filing process and signs off / approves all internal decisions affects tax accounts and filings.
  4. Monitor changes in tax legislation and implement necessary updates to payroll systems and processes.
  5. Develop and implement strategies to optimize compliance and efficiency.
  6. Lead and mentor the payroll tax team, fostering a culture of accuracy and accountability.
  7. Collaborate with HR, Finance, and IT to ensure seamless integration of payroll and tax data.
  8. Manage internal and external audits related to payroll taxes.
  9. Identify and mitigate tax-related risks through proactive analysis and controls.
  10. Maintain documentation and records to support audit readiness.
  11. Evaluate and enhance payroll tax systems and software.
  12. Drive automation and process improvements to reduce errors and increase efficiency.
  13. Ensure accurate setup of tax codes and jurisdictions in payroll systems.
  14. Serve as the primary point of contact for tax authorities and external consultants.
  15. Provide tax-related insights and reports to senior leadership.
  16. Support and assist with internal and external questions, issues, disputes. Ensuring successful resolution of all tax related matter.
  17. Oversight of Employer Health Tax and Workers Compensation accounts and Union, including, opening, closing, remittances, maintenance and yearly filings
  18. Manage EHT/WC/Union audits and reviews

  20. Provide leadership and day-to-day oversight of the Vancouver office, ensuring operational efficiency, team alignment, and a positive workplace culture.
  21. Act as the senior on-site leader, representing corporate priorities and ensuring they are effectively implemented locally, ensuring clear communication and alignment on goals and initiatives
  22. Partner with functional leaders to coordinate resources, address operational challenges, and drive performance across business lines.
  23. Support talent development, engagement and retention within the Vancouver team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or similar).
  • 8+ years of experience in payroll tax, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Advance knowledge of payroll tax regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with payroll issues specific to the TV and Film production industry in Canada and US Non-Resident payee preferred
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage complex tax scenarios and high-volume transactions.

Working conditions

  • Conditions are normal for an office environment
  • The hours of work are 7.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Some overtime may be a requirement of this position.
