The Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre (ACLRC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing human rights, equity, and civil liberties across Alberta. Since its founding in 1982, the Centre has provided trusted public legal education, research, and community engagement on issues ranging from discrimination and equality to fundamental freedoms. Through workshops, resources, partnerships, and advocacy-focused initiatives, ACLRC works to empower Albertans with the knowledge and tools they need to understand their rights, challenge injustice, and build more inclusive communities.

Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for an Articling Student, based in Calgary, Alberta.

The articling student will support ACLRC's work by:


• Conducting legal research on contemporary civil liberties and human rights issues; and


• Assisting with the development and delivery of public legal education materials for schools, community groups, and other organizations across Alberta.

This position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in legal research, policy analysis, educational programming, and access-to-justice initiatives within a small, collaborative non-profit environment.

Key Responsibilities


• Conduct legal research on human rights, civil liberties, and related public policy issues in Alberta.


• Draft research memos, backgrounders, educational resources, and written components of ACLRC publications.


• Assist with updating and maintaining existing ACLRC research materials and online content.


• Support the design, preparation, and delivery of public legal education sessions for schools, community organizations, and professional groups.


• Present legal information in person and virtually to youth and adult learners.


• Participate in stakeholder outreach, including schools, educators, and community partners.


• Assist with program evaluation, data tracking, and reporting tied to funder requirements.


• Provide general support to ACLRC Education and Research staff as needed.

Key Competencies


• Strong legal research, analysis, and written communication skills.


• Ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, accessible language for diverse audiences.


• Demonstrated interest in human rights, civil liberties, or public legal education.


• Experience designing and delivering education materials to diverse audiences.


• Professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently within a small team.


• Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple deadlines and shifting priorities.


• Curiosity, openness to feedback, and a commitment to continual learning.

Qualifications


• A Canadian common law degree or equivalent (JD, LLB, LLM).


• Eligible for enrolment as a Student-at-Law with the Law Society of Alberta by the start date.
