L'Arche Edmonton is seeking a contracted Accountant (independent consultant) for an average of 30 hours a month.
Position OverviewThe Accountant provides professional accounting and financial management services to support the operations of L'Arche Edmonton. The role ensures compliance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, maintains accurate records, produces reliable financial reports, and offers strategic guidance that supports informed decision-making and responsible stewardship of community resources.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management & Reporting
- Compile, analyze, and prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintain financial records in compliance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO).
- Develop, implement, and maintain accounting control procedures.
- Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.
- Prepare annual working paper files and coordinate the annual audit process with external auditors.
- Prepare the annual Charity Information Return (CRA) and other required filings.
- Support the Community Leader/Executive Director in preparing the annual budget and financial forecasts.
- Monitor actual results against budget and identify variances.
- Provide recommendations and data-driven insights to improve financial efficiency and sustainability.
- Analyze financial information to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Provide strategic financial advice to the Community Leader/Executive Director and the board.
- Report potential issues affecting expenses, balances, and cash flow in a timely manner.
- Maintain internal financial controls and safeguarding of assets, including backup and data protection protocols.
- Monitor and support taxation and government compliance.
- Oversee contractual compliance with PDD and CIVIDA (rent subsidy).
- Stay informed about regulatory and policy changes affecting financial management in the non-profit sector.
- Provide oversight and support for accounting software, updates, and troubleshooting.
- Ensure accuracy and integrity of data within financial systems.
- Accounting degree, CPA designation, or equivalent education and experience.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in non-profit financial management or accounting.
- Knowledge of ASNPO, auditing practices, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Experience with budgeting, audit coordination, and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
