About the role:
The Community Y Program Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of programs offered at the Community YMCA. Reporting directly to the Director, this role provides leadership across children, youth, and adult programming, ensuring programs are safe, inclusive, well-run, and aligned with YMCA values and standards.
In this role, you will:
- Coordinate and oversee all Community YMCA programs for children, youth, and adults, including planning, implementing, and evaluating programs to ensure quality, impact, and alignment with the YMCA's mission and community needs.
- Support the development of new programs and enhance existing offerings to strengthen participation, engagement, and program outcomes.
- Recruit, train, schedule, and support program staff and volunteers, providing ongoing coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback while ensuring appropriate staff-to-participant ratios at all times.
- Ensure all programs comply with YMCA child safeguarding, safety, and risk management policies and procedures, including leading safety communications, incident response, and timely completion of incident reports. Stay updated on first aid and CPR techniques to handle emergencies, including working as a Manager on Duty in the facility. Implement and enforce rules to maintain a safe, respectful, and enjoyable environment.
- Manage program communications with participants, families, staff, and community partners, maintaining clear, consistent, and timely messaging.
- Maintain accurate program records, including registrations, attendance, and reporting, and support budgeting, resource allocation, and tracking of program supplies.
- Build strong, positive relationships with participants, families, and community partners, representing the Community YMCA in a professional, approachable, and values-driven manner.
- Collaborate with internal YMCA departments to support seamless program delivery and overall organizational success. Staff take action to support members who are waiting or need assistance
- Adhere to all YMCA standards through the Y Way
- Staff take ownership to maintain clean and tidy spaces
Education and skills qualifications:
- 2-3 years' experience in Community Recreation, Child and Youth, Human Services, or a related field
- Experience working with members of the public, including children and vulnerable people and diverse communities.
- Lived experience as an African Nova Scotian and/or demonstrated experience working in and alongside African Nova Scotian communities is considered a strong asset and aligns with our commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and community-informed programming
- Strong customer service/sales skills, with demonstrated ability to build relationships and establish rapport with members
- Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills
- Experience in fundraising or the nonprofit sector is an asset
- Strong interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and ability to establish rapport with client
- Demonstrated ability to meet multiple, competing deadlines and priorities
- Strong attention to detail
- Proven track record of success in community-oriented program delivery through establishing collaborative internal and external working relationships/project teams
- Flexibility to work irregular hours required (including evenings, weekends, & holidays)
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
