ABOUT US
The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Office develops and implements initiatives aimed at advancing equity, diversity and inclusion within the learning and working environments across the Faculty of Arts & Science. In collaboration with staff and academic administrators in the Office of the Dean, Human Resources offices and various academic units, the EDI Office builds professional development and educational initiatives for all levels of the Arts & Science community. The EDI Office also focusses on policies and practices concerning accessibility, anti-racism, equity, diversity and inclusion.
YOUR OPPORTUNITY
Under the general direction of the Director, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, the Advisor, EDI is responsible for providing support to the EDI Office in the development, implementation and administration of the Faculty's EDI initiatives.
Key responsibilities include: development and delivery of on-going EDI educational programs and outreach initiatives focused on the promotion of EDI initiatives at the Faculty including supporting Faculty wide EDI related campaigns; working with the FAS community in developing and implementing programming, educational and outreach initiatives related to EDI and anti-racism; acting as a resource and providing independent confidential case intake for students, faculty and unionized and non-unionized staff; providing advice to academic leads, students, staff - at the Faculty of Arts & Science with respect to available services, supports, options, relevant policies, and providing appropriate referrals; providing support and research assistance with Human Rights policy analysis and implementation.
The Advisor supports the development of the Faculty's EDI educational curriculum and works collaboratively with the Director in the development and delivery of educational programming. The incumbent is a consultative resource on broader matters of equity, diversity & inclusion.
The Advisor briefs the Director, EDI on emerging issues as they are identified, analyses and revises documents and policy drafts, researches and provides support on special Faculty wide projects.
The incumbent works in a complex environment that requires a high degree of sensitivity, responsiveness and a need to maintain absolute confidentiality, with personal and employment matters. The incumbent must present a professional image in the Office of EDI by interacting knowledgeably and courteously with many people including senior administrators, faculty, staff and students and community members who come into contact with the Office of EDI.
The role of the EDI Advisor will continue to evolve and the individual must be willing to respond to the given priorities of the day and be willing to work cooperatively in a challenging and dynamic environment.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
I. EDUCATION:
Graduate degree in a relevant area of study, preferably with a focus on dispute resolution, human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certification or additional training in conflict resolution, equity and inclusion, and/or change management an asset.
II. EXPERIENCE:
Minimum four (4) years of related experience in delivering programming with an in depth understanding of complex and intersectional issues related to equity, diversity and inclusion in a post-secondary setting or similar complex organization
Demonstrated experience in and understanding of complex issues related to equity and diversity as they relate to the student experience and the workplace strongly preferred; Experience in curriculum design and delivery, adult learning principles, group facilitation, assessment and evaluation techniques; Experience in developing antiracism and cultural diversity programming initiatives and case management; Demonstrated experience and competence in developing targeted training to diverse groups; Demonstrated experience in project management and advancing EDI projects within a post-secondary environment or similar complex organization; Demonstrated experience in research, developing public education materials, promotional materials; and/or community initiatives related to human rights education; Experience working with diverse student body. Experience working within a post-secondary context is strongly preferred. A thorough understanding of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA and relevant legislation/case law.
SKILLS:
Computer experience required, including standard office computer applications (Microsoft 365); SharePoint; web design skills, content management software (Wordpress preferred); Acrobat and other Adobe software is an asset.
Strong written and oral communication skills; Excellent Internet research skills.
Ability to discuss sensitive and complex matters with political acuity.
III. OTHER:
Excellent writing, editing and research skills; Excellent interpersonal, communication, leadership and facilitation skills; Strong social media skills; Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse constituencies in a team environment; Approachable and pro-active; Demonstrated abilities to multi-task, trouble shoot and problem solve; Demonstrated ability to assist individuals in distress; Demonstrated ability to assist with working on human rights issues and knowledge of community resources and best practices in anti-racism and cultural diversity; Ability to work with people from diverse cultures and communities; Demonstrated tact, discretion, ability to exercise good judgment; Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines; Awareness of student environments, campus systems and organizations, and the University's policies and procedures related to student life and activities strongly preferred; Excellent organizational and programming skills; Ability to be innovative and work independently; Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations; Demonstrated ability to relate to students, staff, and faculty in a manner that builds trust and confidence. High degree of political acuity and judgment; ability to deal with individuals in a manner which facilitates cooperation and consensus building.
Command of contemporary equity, diversity, and inclusion concepts, paradigms and issues. Ability to critically analyze the range of EDI paradigms, their strengths and limitations, and to articulate these to a diverse audience. Ability to research and identify best practices of equity, diversity and inclusion. Knowledge of current trends, legislation, and regulations in Human Rights in the context of higher education. Research, analytical skills (including statistical analysis and interpretation).
