Sessional Instructional Assistant, BIO153 Evening Practical Support

Course: BIO153H5S – Diversity of Organisms

Course Description: The consequences of Darwinian evolution: adaptations of organisms as a product of the main evolutionary mechanism - natural selection. The roles of natural selection and other mechanisms in the diversification of life are reviewed, along with the diversity of structures and life cycles in bacteria, protists, animals, plants and fungi.

Class schedule:

Qualifications: A 4-year degree in Biology with appropriate background for the course to be demonstrated. Must be available to attend on-site must be available to attend each week Tuesdays 4:30-7:30pm, Wednesdays 4:30-7:30pm AND Thursdays 4:30-6pm for 11 labs. Preferred Qualifications include: academic qualifications, enrolment as a graduate student, previous TA experience, suitability for the position and appropriate background in the subject/specialty within the Department of Biology

Duties: Typical duties may include but are not limited to: Re-setting benches between lab sections, gathering materials and supplies as needed and/or assisting with equipment repair as needed; supporting safety and supporting other TAs as needed during evening lab times, ensuring lab rooms are secured and disposing of materials as needed. Assisting with A/V system troubleshooting.

Rate of Pay: In accordance with the current CUPE Collective Agreement CUPE3902, Unit 3, effective September 1, 2025, the rate of pay for a sessional instructional assistant is $ 54.27 per hour. Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.

It is understood that some announcements of vacancies are tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolment.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement. Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
