Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is looking for a Research Assistant - Livestock Carcass Merit & Market Competitiveness to join our team in Lacombe (Alberta).

What will you be doing?

As part of their duties, the successful candidate will be expected to identify food components using a range of testing and analytical methods, and to contribute to the development of analytical techniques for evaluating food properties. This includes supporting the development of laboratory standard operating procedures for research activities, as well as new techniques and methods related to food preservation and processing.

The successful candidate will contribute to advancing the understanding of relationships among food production, processing, storage, and distribution, and their impact on food components, nutrition, physiology, quality, and safety. Additional responsibilities include contributing to the maintenance of food and other biological samples; enhancing knowledge of fundamental food properties; and developing analytical and evaluation techniques, including chemical, microbiological, biochemical, and sensory testing methods. The role also involves data analysis and the preparation of presentations, reports, and scientific publications.

The successful candidate will be required to provide technical support, advice, and training within and outside the organization, and to design, fabricate, or maintain research equipment as needed. The successful candidate must maintain effective, respectful, and professional communication with members of their work group and other groups at the Centre, as well as with service and sales representatives and members of the public, as operational requirements dictate.

What do you need to bring to the table?

  • A secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Experience working in laboratory environment.
  • Experience in database software including but not limited to Excel or Access.
  • Experience in statistical analyses software including but not limited to R, XLStat, SAS or SPSS.

Quelles sont les fonctions du poste?

Dans le cadre de ses fonctions, la personne retenue devra, au moyen de plusieurs méthodes d'analyse et d'essai, déterminer les éléments des aliments et contribuer à la mise au point de méthodes d'analyse pour évaluer les propriétés des aliments. Cela inclut la contribution à la mise au point de procédures opérationnelles normalisées en laboratoire pour les activités de recherche ainsi que de nouvelles techniques et méthodes de conservation et de transformation des aliments.

De plus, la personne retenue participera à l'amélioration de la compréhension des relations entre la production, la transformation, l'entreposage et la distribution des aliments et les éléments, la nutrition, la physiologie, la qualité et la salubrité des aliments. Parmi les responsabilités supplémentaires, mentionnons la conservation des échantillons alimentaires ou autres échantillons biologiques; l'amélioration de la connaissance des propriétés fondamentales des aliments; et la mise au point de techniques d'analyse et d'évaluation, notamment des méthodes d'essai chimique, microbiologique, biochimique et sensoriel. Le poste comprend également l'analyse des données et la préparation de présentations, de rapports et de publications scientifiques.

La personne retenue devra fournir un soutien, des conseils et de la formation techniques au sein de l'organisation et à l'extérieur de celle-ci, et devra aussi, au besoin, concevoir, fabriquer ou entretenir du matériel de recherche. Elle devra maintenir une communication efficace, respectueuse et professionnelle avec les membres de son groupe de travail et ceux d'autres groupes de travail du Centre ainsi qu'avec les représentants commerciaux, les représentants des entreprises de service et les membres du public, selon les exigences opérationnelles.
