Job Overview

The Director of Facilities is a key leadership role responsible for the overall facilities operations across the Knightstone Student Communities portfolio. This includes oversight of building systems, preventative maintenance programs, vendor management, capital planning, and environmental health and safety standards. The Director will lead, coach, and develop a team of facilities professionals while establishing operational standards that ensure safe, sustainable, and efficient residential environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist General Managers in recruiting, training and mentoring facilities team members across multiple properties. Including the creation of training plans for professional development and employee safety.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and deliver training programs on building systems, maintenance procedures, and compliance standards.
  • Oversee the daily maintenance and operation of the communities, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire safety, and life safety systems.
  • Implement and manage preventative maintenance schedules and inspection protocols.
  • Ensure timely resolution of resident and property maintenance requests by monitoring KPI's related to facilities operations.
  • Develop and maintain a multi-year capital plan for facilities improvements and replacements.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership on budgeting, procurement, and long-term operational planning.
  • Oversee capital projects and vendor-contracted work, ensuring adherence to scope, budget, and timelines.
  • Establish and enforce facilities operating standards across all properties.
  • Ensure compliance with provincial and municipal building codes, fire safety regulations, and environmental health standards.
  • Maintain accurate facilities records, inspection logs, and compliance documentation.
  • Source, negotiate, and manage vendor and contractor relationships.
  • Monitor expenses, track cost savings, and ensure alignment with approved budgets.
  • Support procurement initiatives to drive consistency and value across the portfolio.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of facilities management experience, preferably in high-rise residential, student housing, or multi-unit environments.
  • Strong technical knowledge of building systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire/life safety systems.
  • Proven experience leading, training, and developing facilities teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement preventative maintenance programs and establish operational standards.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with staff, residents, and institutional partners.
  • Post-secondary education in engineering, building systems, facilities management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Professional designations such as FMA, BOMI, SMT, or LEED accreditation are considered assets.
