The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is currently accepting applications for a Clerical Assistant – Housing student. This position will start approximately May 1, 2026, for a period up to August 31, 2026.

Job description

The Clerical Assistant Student with Housing Services will provide general reception duties and clerical support.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent's core values and competencies
  • Develop and design tenant newsletters
  • Provide reception or back-up reception as required
  • Assist with special projects
  • Create templates and procedural manuals
  • Keyboarding, transcription, photocopying and filing as requested
  • Handling confidential information in an appropriate manner
  • Update files/ inventory database
  • Accurate data entry
  • Prepare annual reports
  • Complete software training programs/ tutorials

Essential qualifications

  • To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2025/2026 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2026 fall term (normally starting in August or September)
  • Preference will be given to students who are currently enrolled in a post-secondary university school program, specifically social work, psychology, sociology or business administration
  • Administrative/clerical experience in an office environment (including receptionist experience)
  • Customer service experience in an office environment
  • Experience working with families in need of assistance (through work, volunteer or co-op positions)
  • Solid organizational and time management skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills and decision-making ability
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel and Outlook

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works indoors
  • This position works weekday hours

Driver's licence/vehicle requirements

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's license with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.

Background check requirements

The successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) (working with vulnerable persons) prior to commencement of employment. You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Sitting: constant sitting in a chair
  • Hands: constant fine finger dexterity (movement), mousing (filing, computer, mousing)

Benefits

This summer student position will receive an hourly wage of $17.60 to $18.00 and will receive vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
