Reporting to the Supervisor, Facilities Operations, the maintenance handyperson will assist the building operators in carrying out regular maintenance tasks to ensure that high maintenance standards are maintained according to Town stipulations. This position involves working on a part-time basis to a maximum of 24 hours per week.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Facilities with pools:
  • Performs regular water testing and maintains records as indicated by Ontario Public Pool Regulation 565 and complies with guidelines established by the Town of Oakville in accordance with that legislation.
  • Identify and resolve water quality issues.
  • Fill chemical feed systems and ensure that chemical levels are within required guidelines; add chemicals to the pool as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the pool tank including regular vacuuming and emergency clean up in the event of a pool fouling.
  • Maintain equipment checks and records operational setting and performance of filtration, pool heating.
  • Maintains mechanical systems and performs routine maintenance i.e. backwashing.
  • Maintain and track inventory of pool related items such as chemicals, testing reagents, and small parts.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment to meet the needs of the job, including wearing a life jacket or PFD when in the pool area performing duties alone.
  • Regular inspections and observation of facility condition; report any breakdowns or damage as required.
  • Receive, reconcile, load and unload goods and reconcile receipts (may involve lifting 55lb+ bags of chemicals).
  • Move and install furniture including moving of desks, file cabinets, wall units, etc.;
  • Provides assistance with mechanical systems and supports routine maintenance activities, such as system resets, as needed.
  • Building systems support including visual inspections, filter checks, and reporting issues.
  • Maintain and track inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintains safety and cleanliness of facility (i.e.. offices, washrooms, program areas).
  • Perform removal of garbage and recycling materials, perform custodial duties as needed.
  • Inspect, clear and clean front entrance, parking lot, and fire exits of ice and snow.
  • Adhere to all WHMIS legislation and work within Health and Safety guidelines to ensure building is safe for the visiting public.
  • Room set up and tear down based on program and building needs.
  • Small repairs and general maintenance, such as changing light bulbs, fixing leaking fixtures, touchup painting and replacing ceiling tiles.
  • Assist appropriate staff with special maintenance projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum high school education or acceptable equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of related experience with demonstrated mechanical aptitude and knowledge of building maintenance. Candidate must possess general Handyperson skills (ie. minor carpentry work, painting, dry walling and use of small power tools).
  • When applying for pool location:
  • CPO (Certified Pool Operator) certification or an equivalent is preferred; understands how Ontario Public Pool Regulation 565 relates to pool maintenance and water quality.
  • Must complete Respirator Fit Test testing after hire, in accordance with Town of Oakville Corporate Health & Safety requirements.
  • Required to work independently and as part of a team of peers to complete all necessary tasks during shift.
  • Communicate and interact with internal staff and customers in a courteous manner.
  • Must be prepared to work flexible shifts, including morning, afternoon, evening, weekend and split shifts as scheduled, and on-call as required to meet the needs of the facility.
  • Able to perform all activities including but not limited to lifting over 50 lbs., climbing, working above ground level on ladders.
  • Please note that successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check, with vulnerable sector screening, dated within the last 30 days as a condition of employment.
