Role Summary:
Operators are responsible for safely and efficiently operating equipment such as excavators, loaders, and skid steers to support drilling and foundation operations. They play a key role in site organization, spoil management, and material movement while maintaining high standards of safety and productivity. Operators are expected to work collaboratively with the drilling and labour crews, follow direction from site supervision, and ensure equipment is used in accordance with manufacturer specifications and Hall's safety expectations.
Core Responsibilities:
- Operate excavators, loaders, and skid steers to support drilling, excavation, spoil management, and material handling.
- Perform daily equipment inspections, lubrication, and maintenance checks; report defects or damage immediately to the Foreman.
- Assist with site preparation, backfill, grading, and clean-up.
- Load and unload materials safely using appropriate rigging and signaling practices.
- Maintain awareness of ground personnel and equipment while operating; use designated spotters when required.
- Ensure safe distances from overhead and underground utilities.
- Collaborate closely with drill rig operators, pump operators, and ground personnel to maintain site efficiency.
- Assist with installation and removal of drilling pads, mats, and laydown areas.
- Understand and follow lift capacity charts, load stability, and machine limitations.
- Keep cabs and work areas clean and organized at the end of each shift.
- Complete daily hazard assessments and participate in toolbox and coordination meetings.
- Support overall site safety and contribute to maintaining a positive, productive work environment.
Technical Skills:
- Competent in the operation of excavators, loaders, and skid steers in various ground conditions.
- Able to perform routine maintenance, refueling, and inspection tasks on equipment.
- Understands basic rigging and hoisting principles when assisting with lifts or material placement.
- Familiar with working around drilling and pumping operations.
- Understands site layout, slope stability, and excavation best practices.
- Ability to read and interpret site drawings, grade stakes, and basic project instructions.
- Demonstrates strong spatial awareness and understanding of blind spots while operating near other equipment or personnel.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; able to coordinate effectively with operators, labourers, and supervisors.
- Displays a positive attitude and commitment to safety and efficiency.
- Shows initiative and professionalism in maintaining equipment and supporting the crew.
- Contributes to a culture of learning by sharing experience and assisting new or less experienced workers when appropriate.
- Dependable, adaptable, and focused on achieving daily production goals.
Qualifications:
- Years of experience: Minimum 1 to 2 years operating excavator, loader, or skid steer in a construction environment.
- Education: High School or Equivalent.
- Considered an asset:
- Ground Disturbance Level 2
- Rigging
- Fall Protection
- First Aid
- Physical fitness for high-intensity tasks
- Lift up to 50 lbs
- This role includes tasks requiring respiratory protection. Employees must be clean-shaven and fit-tested for ½ or full non-powered respirators, as per Provincial OHS Regulations and Hall OHS Policy.
