JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of the instructor is to lead and contribute to the clinical success of students and to the success of the College in achieving its statement of purpose. Under general direction, the instructor is responsible for providing quality instruction and facilitating student learning according to the expected learning outcomes. They will be responsible for providing practical instruction, mentorship, and support to students, ensuring they gain the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles as HCAs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct hands-on clinical training for HCA students.
  • Supervise and evaluate students' clinical performance and progress.
  • Provide constructive feedback and mentorship to support student development.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant health and safety regulations and protocols.
  • Collaborate with academic faculty to integrate clinical experiences with theoretical learning.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and evaluations.
  • Stay updated with the latest health care practices and health care trends.
  • Provide support with student skills assessments in the lab prior to attending clinical training.
  • Identify student learning needs and develop a clinical success plan to support the student towards building confidence and competence.
  • Take part in on-going professional development opportunities offered by the college.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

To be successful in the Clinical Instructor position, individuals must be committed to developing, maintaining and demonstrating the following:

Practice Education Course Instruction:

  1. Current unrestricted (i.e., no conditions on license or provisional registration) full registration as a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM); and

  2. Demonstrated ability to teach adult learners (e.g., completion of Provincial Instructor Diploma or equivalent education or previous teaching experience with satisfactory references or positive performance evaluations and student course evaluations); and

  3. Two or more years of full-time Canadian nursing experience (1 year = 1400 hours) with relevant knowledge of the Canadian health care system, the roles and responsibilities of healthcare team members and current policies and procedures within residential and community care settings.

Nursing work experience to include:

  • Experience in working with older adults with complex health needs; and

  • Experience or orientation (e.g., shadow shifts) in home support and multi-level/complex care.

  • Evidence of completion of course work in Indigenous cultural safety and humility (e.g., San'yas Anti-Racism Indigenous Cultural Safety Training or an alternative training program); and or equivalent

  • Evidence of completion of the Health Care Assistant Practice in BC course available on the LearningHub as part of their orientation/on-boarding. This will support a current understanding of the role of the HCA within BC.

Additional Skills and Abilities:

· Relevant industry skills and knowledge relating to the area of instruction, including ongoing professional development and continuous improvement.

· Interest in pedagogical and multi-modal education approaches an asset.

· Advanced oral and written communication skills, including presentation and group facilitation.

· Ability to motivate and inspire students.

· High standards of behaviour, a professional attitude and commitment to quality service.

· Ability to work cooperatively with other instructors and staff.

· Ability to consider and respond appropriately to the needs, feelings and capabilities of students, to provide feedback and treat students equitably.

Comfortable with computer technology, learning management systems, online delivery and management of course content and students through synchronous and asynchronous methods
