Looking for a rare opportunity to step into a leadership role and build a thriving local multiplatform newsroom from the ground up? CBC News is opening an eight-person station in Peel region, another significant expansion of local news coverage under the proximity pillar of CBC/Radio-Canada's new five-year strategic plan.

We're hiring an executive producer to serve people who live and work in Peel Region by providing local coverage and service in ways that are relevant to them.

As the executive producer for CBC Peel, you will report to the managing editor of CBC Toronto. You will lead the station in developing and nurturing relationships with those who call Peel Region home. You will oversee the conception, assignment and distribution of daily, breaking, investigative and explanatory journalism in all formats–video, audio and text–on digital and broadcast platforms for people who live and work in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon.

You are the go-to person for journalistic decisions for all platforms. You will ensure CBC Peel sets the region's news agenda. You will guide programming decisions around breaking news events. You have experience delivering news for traditional broadcast platforms, but understand that audience growth is in mobile and streaming spaces. 

You have an in-depth understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices and are responsible for ensuring your team functions within these guidelines. You can make quick decisions when required but you're also a creative thinker with a track record of finding solutions to complex problems. You are excited by change and experimentation, and have your finger on the pulse of audience consumption trends.

You are adept at engaging with audiences and connecting with the community, looking for new ways to reach people where they are. You know that representing and engaging with people who have a diversity of viewpoints and experiences makes for a more representative journalistic offer and welcome opportunities to challenge the status quo and confront bias.

You lead by example and are committed to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture. You know how to develop a shared sense of team purpose and can set up systems to ensure that priorities, roles and responsibilities are clearly defined. You are able to motivate people to do their best work in a rapidly evolving news environment .You can make quick decisions when required but you're an open-minded leader who encourages healthy debate and creative thinking and are skilled at navigating conflict and leading through change. You will play a key leadership role in hiring new members of the team and ensuring continuous development opportunities within a rapidly changing and competitive media environment.

Key Tasks:

  • Provides editorial direction for all news stories to ensure our content is original, relevant, has impact, and meets our journalistic standards..

  • Works collaboratively with teams across the CBC to ensure stories are shared with the widest possible audience.

  • Oversees community outreach and engagement.

  • Coordinate training and development opportunities for staff, providing feedback, coaching and opportunities for growth

  • Leads the planning of special projects and coverage plans.

  • Allocates resources against strategic outcomes.

  • Plans, leads and assigns breaking news coverage on all platforms, including special programming as needed.

  • Oversees expansion of live programming on emerging platforms such as free ad-supported television (FAST) and digital live pages.

  • Monitor audience and industry trends, and develop ideas and approaches for future opportunities.

  • Collaborate with communications teams to deepen our connections with communities in the Peel Region through programming, engagement and outreach.

  • Provides guidance on legal risk management.

  • Responds to complaints from the audience.

  • Performs all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A passion for local news.

  • Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism, and CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Experience planning long-term projects, organizing logistics and juggling resources against strategic goals.

Additional Requirements:

  • University degree or equivalent.

  • Ten (10) years' experience which must include work in both digital and video.

  • Ability to work flexible hours as required, including weekends on call.

  • This position requires you to work in the CBC Peel office full-time.
