API Integration Specialist (Contract)

Location: Hybrid – 2 days/
month
onsite in Kingston, ON

Term: 6–8 months, with possible extension

About the Role:

We are seeking an
API Integration Specialist
to provide expert support for an API management migration project. The successful candidate will oversee administration of the existing APIM environment, lead the transition to a new modern platform, and ensure seamless integrations across the enterprise.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Support Existing APIM Environment (WSO2)

  2. Administer WSO2 APIM using Carbon, Publisher, Dev Portal, Microsoft Entra, SAML, and OpenAPI.

  3. Perform daily health checks and generate weekly performance reports using Elastic reporting.
  4. Track incidents in Azure DevOps (ADO), including root cause analysis and resolution notes.
  5. Monitor alerts and respond to ensure SLA compliance.

  6. Migration Planning & Change Management

  7. Deliver a detailed Migration Strategy Document (scope, risks, milestones, rollback plan, etc.).

  8. Collaborate with internal OCM teams to create a Stakeholder Communication & Change Management Plan.
  9. Develop a Migration Acceptance Test Plan with functional, security, and performance criteria.

  10. Build & Validate New APIM Environment

  11. Evaluate and recommend a new APIM platform based on ecosystem fit and non-functional requirements.

  12. Install and configure the selected APIM using infrastructure-as-code.
  13. Conduct post-installation testing and deliver configuration documentation.
  14. Plan and execute decommissioning of legacy WSO2 components.

  15. Code & API Migration

  16. Migrate APIs/services from Ballerina to Python Azure Functions.

  17. Implement Git + Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines with branching and promotion strategies.
  18. Validate migrated APIs for functionality, security, and performance.
  19. Deliver a Migration Integrity Report and remediation plan.
  20. Support development of new APIs as needed.

  21. Documentation, Training & Support

  22. Produce technical documentation: architecture diagrams, runbooks, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.

  23. Deliver at least two live training sessions and one recorded session with materials.
  24. Provide 30-day post-migration support for issue resolution.

  25. Reporting

  26. Submit weekly status reports during migration and biweekly during steady-state.

  27. Provide monthly executive summaries for senior IT leadership.
  28. Report weekly API execution status in the new environment.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • 5+ years managing and implementing APIM environments (including support and administration).
  • Hands-on experience with
    WSO2
    and
    Azure APIM
    platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of
    Git
    ,
    Azure DevOps
    ,
    Docker
    ,
    Kubernetes
    , and
    Azure data services
    .
  • Proven experience with
    at least two large, complex integration or APIM migration projects
    .
  • Skilled in producing clear technical documentation and delivering presentations to senior IT leaders.
  • Experience working in
    Agile environments
    .
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Previous experience in higher education or large public sector environments
  • Organizational change management experience
