Animal Care Attendant (Surgery) — King Animal Hospital (King City, ON)

King Animal Hospital is a privately owned Equine and Small Animal Referral and Emergency Hospital. Our 60,000-sq-ft, state-of-the-art facility sits on 50 acres in King City, Ontario.

We provide advanced specialty referral, emergency, and rehabilitation services supported by a collaborative, multidisciplinary team that includes RVTs, ACAs, CSRs, ER DVMs, and board-certified specialists across Surgery, Critical Care, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Cardiology, Oncology, and Rehabilitation.

As an
Animal Care Attendant (ACA)
, you will work closely with Registered Veterinary Technicians, Veterinarians, and Veterinary Specialists to deliver high-quality care and support to small animal patients, with a strong focus on surgical and neurology services.

Position Summary

The
Surgery Animal Care Attendant
supports the surgical and neurology teams in the care and preparation of small animal patients. This role requires attention to detail, physical stamina, and a commitment to maintaining safe, sterile, and efficient surgical environments. You will assist with patient handling, surgical prep, equipment cleaning and maintenance, post-operative care, and diagnostic imaging support.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Handling & Surgical Preparation

  • Assist with safe restraint for catheter placement, intubation, induction, and other procedures.
  • Shave and prep patients for surgery following aseptic protocols.
  • Safely move and position patients for surgery.
  • Support setup of anesthetic machines and monitoring equipment.
  • Assist the surgical team during procedures, including scrubbing in when required.

Surgical Support & Sterilization

  • Follow direction from the OR Attendant, Lead Surgery Coordinator, and Anesthesiologist to maintain smooth workflow.
  • Set up ORs with the required instruments, supplies, and sterile materials.
  • Clean, disinfect, and restock surgical suites.
  • Sterilize, maintain, and organize surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Adhere strictly to infection control and aseptic protocols.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in cages, prep areas, and workspaces.

Patient Care & Recovery

  • Assist with patient recovery monitoring as directed by veterinary staff.
  • Walk, feed, and provide basic care for post-operative patients.
  • Observe behavior and promptly report concerns to the RVT or DVM.

Neurology & Diagnostic Imaging Assistance

  • Support neurology patients undergoing CT and MRI, including safe positioning and monitoring.
  • Assist with X-ray and C-arm imaging as required.
  • Maintain and stock imaging areas.

General Department Support & Teamwork

  • Participate in on-call and after-hours call-ins for urgent surgical cases.
  • Assist other departments when needed to support hospital flow.
  • Attend team meetings and contribute to a positive department culture.
  • Support RVTs and DVMs with restraint and basic patient care tasks.
  • Maintain laundry, instrument care, and supply stocking in the surgical department.
  • Record observations and treatments accurately in
    Vet Radar
    .
  • Follow all hospital protocols related to patient care, safety, and hygiene.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Prior experience in a veterinary setting, preferably with surgical experience (required).
  • Comfortable handling and restraining animals, including anesthetized patients.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks (bending, standing, lifting).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to learn, grow, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Positive attitude, professionalism, and dedication to patient care and cleanliness.
