For this exciting position, we are specifically targeting students who have a background in Occupational Health and Safety, Mining Engineering, or a related field. We are seeking a highly motivated and diligent Health, Safety, Security, and Emergency Response Co-op to join our HVC MLE team for an 8 months work term.

If you are not currently located in the area of this co-op position, you must be willing to either commute or relocate to the surrounding area for the entire duration of the co-op term. You must also currently be a student enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution and will be enrolled throughout the duration of the co-op term (you will also be returning back to the post-secondary institution once the co-op term is completed). Proof of a valid work permit will also be required, if applicable.

Pay Range: CAD $4,100 - $5,300 per month

Salary is commensurate with the number of academic semesters and prior co-op experiences completed.

Working Conditions

  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Assist in conducting risk assessments, hazard analyses, inspections and audits of mining and construction activities
  • Assist in the investigation incidents and near-misses, collaborating with the Health, Safety, Security and Emergency Response (HSSER) team to promote safety
  • Develop and distribute communications and bulletins
  • Supervise compliance with Health, Safety, Security and ER regulations and company policies
  • Help maintain and update records, reports and presentations
  • Support improvement development of HSSER, mining/mine evacuation personal protective equipment, and construction policies, programs, and procedures
  • Participate and support the coordination and development of emergency and security drills and exercises, including mine evacuation procedures
  • Collaborate with the security team to improve security protocols and procedures tailored to mining operations, supervising and reporting any suspicious activities
  • Participate in the review and update of safety protocols specific to mining and construction operations
  • Assist in the management of HSSER and security equipment and supplies
  • Assist with patrols of construction scopes and facilities to ensure safety and security
  • Support the implementation of access control measures for mining and construction sites

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program, preferably in Occupational Health and Safety, Mining Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety regulations and standard processes is a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Basic knowledge of emergency response and security protocols is a plus
  • A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for the duration of the co-op is required

Preferred Certifications

  • First Aid and CPR Certification
  • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) Certification
  • Any volunteer service – St. John's Ambulance, Emergency Response, Fire Hall, etc.

All students will be required to complete pre-employment drug and medical screening prior to commencing work.
