The opportunity
The Business Development team at The Chang School of Continuing Education is seeking a highly skilled Subject Matter Expert (SME) to design and deliver one, or more, full-day training workshops focused on skill-building in the areas of negotiation, effective communication, collaboration, and conflict management.
Two-Phase Engagement (Separate Employment Contracts)
This opportunity is structured as two distinct phases of work, each governed by a separate employment contract. Successful completion of Part 1 does not guarantee appointment to Part 2; however, candidates will be considered for both phases.
Phase 1: Workshop Design
Duration: January to March 2026
Deliverable: Content for full-day(s), in-person, training workshop
Hours: 6 hours per 1 workshop developed. Based on client needs, development of up to 3 workshops may be requested. 6-18 hours overall for workshop development.
This work will be governed by a separate, non-union employment contract.
The successful candidate will develop content that expertly bridges the gap between theoretical frameworks of conflict resolution and the high-stakes, public-facing reality of de-escalation, persuasion and negotiation. A central requirement in the design and development of this training session is the integration of applied exercises. The curriculum content must move beyond passive learning; every theoretical concept must be paired with immersive, "real-world" application, such as live simulations, interactive case studies, and inter-peer activities. Workshop participants must not only understand the complexity of conflict dynamics but be able to actively demonstrate mastery in navigating stakeholder friction and de-escalating sensitive community-based conflicts in real-time.
The deliverables include, but are not limited to:
- A workshop overview, which includes the session title, description, and learning outcomes
- A workshop agenda, which identifies each application exercise
- Resources to support each activity, such as worksheets, case studies, role play descriptions, etc.
- A slide deck aligned with TMU brand guidelines (Chang School branded Powerpoint template will be provided)
Phase 2: Workshop Facilitation
Duration: One to Three Days
Deliverable: Facilitation of a full-day, in-person, training workshop
Hours: 8 hours per 1 facilitated workshop. Up to 3 workshops may be requested for facilitation based on client need. 8-24 hours overall for facilitation.
The facilitation phase will be offered under a separate employment contract governed by the CUPE 3904, Unit 2 collective agreement.
The core of this engagement is the high-impact delivery of a full-day, applied learning experience. We are not looking for a lecturer, but a master facilitator who can transform theoretical concepts into a high-engagement skill-building experience. You must be adept at "reading the room," pivoting the curriculum to address the specific examples and/or questions raised by participants, and providing immediate, constructive feedback during live role play and simulation-based activities.
Qualifications
- Master's degree, or equivalent professional experience in facilitating training for corporate audiences/adult learners.
- 5+ years of teaching/facilitation experience in leadership, conflict management, negotiation, psychology, public policy, social work, or a related area. Professional certification (e.g. adult education and training, PMP, a Mediator designation) is an asset.
- Experience in professional negotiation, mediation, or conflict resolution, preferably with a background in public administration, community services, or social work is preferred.
- Proven track record of designing, developing and delivering training to adult learners.
- Mastery of active listening, empathetic framing, and delivery of coaching and feedback.
