JOB SUMMARY:

The Behavioural Support Coordinator provides culturally sensitive behavioural and emotional support to Tsuut'ina students (K5 to Grade 12). This role involves developing and implementing trauma-informed strategies to foster a safe, positive, and culturally inclusive learning environment. The Coordinator works collaboratively with students, families, Elders, school staff, and the wider community to address individual student needs, reinforce positive behaviours, and promote academic and personal success. They will collaborate with schools to develop short-term, medium-term, and long-term behaviour plans that align with the district's strategic plan.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Student Support and Intervention – develop and implement individualized Behavioural Support Plans (BSPs) that incorporate culturally relevant practices and teachings. Conduct culturally sensitive assessments to identify root causes of behavioural challenges, considering intergenerational trauma and systemic issues. Provide one-on-one or group-based support using trauma-informed, strengths-based approaches. Equip students with positive coping mechanisms, self-regulation skills, and conflict resolution strategies. Offer crisis intervention and de-escalation support as needed.
  • Cultural Integration and Community Engagement – partner with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to integrate Tsuut'ina teachings, ceremonies, and land-based learning into support plans and school activities. Act as a liaison between the school, students, and families. Facilitate workshops and talking circles focused on emotional well-being, cultural identity, and healthy relationships. Promote a school-wide environment of cultural safety, respect, and inclusiveness for all members of the school community.
  • Collaboration and Capacity Building – collaborate with the school's support team to develop and review collaborative response plans. Provide training and mentorship to teachers and staff on culturally relevant, trauma-informed practices and positive behavioural interventions. Implement and support district-wide behaviour resources.
  • Administration, Reporting, and Policy – maintain confidential and accurate records of student progress, interventions, and outcomes. Prepare and submit reports as required by the Director of Education. Recommend policy development related to behaviour programming. Stay current with research and best practices in Indigenous education and trauma-informed behavioural support.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Desired Education, Experience and Knowledge:

o Bachelor of Education Degree (B.Ed.), Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.), or a related field.

o Experience teaching across multiple grades, divisions, and with students with diverse learning needs.

o Experience working with Indigenous youth.

o Experience in behaviour management, functional behaviour assessments, and individualized support planning.

o Experience collaborating with classroom teachers to integrate behavioural programming into teaching and learning practices.

o Knowledge of Alberta Education curriculum, standards, and Ministry initiatives.

o Knowledge of historical and systemic issues impacting Indigenous communities.

o Ability to build trust and foster positive relationships.

o Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

  • General Employment Requirements:

o Valid Driver's License, and reliable transportation.

o Valid Interim Professional Certificate (IPC) or a Permanent Professional Certificate (PPC).

o Criminal Record Check, and Vulnerable Sector Check.
