For Medical Laboratory Assistant positions that is full-time and permanent, recruitment bonuses include: $3,000 on start date, $3,000 at 6 months of service, $5,000 at 1 year of service and $7,000 at 2 years of service. For Job shares, salary, bonuses/allowances are pro-rated in accordance with hours worked.

Reporting to the Manager Laboratory Services, the Senior Laboratory Assistant will work within their scope of professional practice in a team environment. The position will coordinate the functions of the Laboratory Assistants. Supervising the daily operations in the collection room and specimen processing/receiving area of the Laboratory and assists with Laboratory Assistants duties to maintain a consistent flow of laboratory samples and reports in and out of the laboratory. The Senior Laboratory Assistant is responsible for special projects, quality control specifically of point of care equipment, training and evaluating new Laboratory Assistants, maintaining standard operating procedures, and updating them when required and providing support in the development of quality systems of the laboratory.

Under the direction of the Manager Laboratory Services, the incumbent of this position is responsible to assist with operational functions of the laboratory. Supervise Laboratory Assistants and other designated staff by performing duties such as scheduling, coordinating, and prioritizing work assignments, and assisting with staff coverage. Participate in staff training, scheduling, and onboarding. Receive and respond to staff and client requests. Assume additional responsibilities in the absence of Department Manager. Responsible for ensuring prompt and courteous customer service. Ensure that standards for technical efficiency, quality control, Department of Health and other government regulations are met.

The above qualifications must be attained by: 

• Successful completion of a recognized Canadian Laboratory Assistant Program 
• Must be licensed to practice as a Laboratory Assistant with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science
• Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
