Job Summary

We are hiring a Senior Front-End Web Developer to manage the development and optimization of the official website for Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services. This modern, user-friendly website connects people across the province with trusted health information and services.

You will collaborate with communicators, UX designers, digital writers, IT colleagues, and project leads to create accessible, responsive, and high-performing web experiences using WordPress and related tools. Reporting to the provincial manager, website and digital content, you will establish development best practices and play a key role in advancing our digital communications strategy.

What you will do:

  • Configure, develop, implement, and maintain front-end components, features, and custom templates within a WordPress-based environment.
  • Lead code reviews and enforce front-end development standards.
  • Mentor and coach a developer, assigning tasks and supporting growth.
  • Collaborate with content specialists, UX designers, IT teams and other colleagues to create responsive, accessible, mobile-optimized and user-focused web experiences.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues, conduct detailed quality assurance checks, and optimize front-end performance.
  • Contribute to planning and implementation of microsites, chatbots, intranet tools, and other digital platforms.
  • Ensure all front-end configurations meet performance, accessibility (WCAG), mobile optimization, branding, and security standards.
  • Support integration with APIs, third-party services, analytics tools, and emerging technologies (e.g. AI).
  • Establish and uphold best practices for component structure, code quality, maintainability, and inclusive design.
  • Liaise and work closely IT teams to coordinate back-end functions, technical maintenance, and DevOps processes.
  • Document workflows, functionality, and provide CMS training and support to internal teams.
  • Identify and implement scalable, innovative solutions to enhance the platform.
  • Stay current with industry trends in front-end frameworks, WordPress capabilities, accessibility, and configuration/development practices.
  • Participate in digital strategy discussions, and provide other support as required.

Job Qualifications

Education

Degree or diploma in Web Development or Design, Computer Science, Digital Media, or related field.

Additional coursework or certification in front-end development, UX/UI design, or digital accessibility is an asset.

Membership and/or affiliation with professional associations is considered an asset.

Experience

Minimum of five years of experience in front-end development, including deep proficiency in WordPress custom theme and plugin development.

Experience mentoring or supervising developers.

Experience collaborating on complex web builds and working with cross-disciplinary teams.

Experience working in agile or fast-paced environments with shifting priorities and tight timelines.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)

Proficiency in WordPress and front-end development languages and frameworks (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, React or an asset).

Strong HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and responsive design frameworks, and familiarity with Git.

Strong understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1+), mobile optimization, and cross-browser compatibility.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to mentor junior developers.

Ability to build user-friendly, high-performance, and visually engaging interfaces aligned with brand and usability standards.

Knowledge of SEO principles and familiarity with website analytics to support content performance.

Technical aptitude combined with creativity, problem-solving, and a continuous improvement mindset.

Ability to work collaboratively with content, communications, and UX teams to enhance the user experience.

Strong organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Attention to detail and commitment to producing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code and configurations.

Demonstrates initiative, professionalism, and sound judgment in a team-oriented culture.
