UBC Sauder's Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre supports business students' personal and professional development journey to responsible leadership through customized services focused on self-exploration, career development and access to business communities.

The Senior Associate, Business Development is the team's central liaison across all industries responsible for managing and growing the annual corporate campus recruitment campaign and supporting the delivery of work experience opportunities for both undergraduate and master level students. 

Field-based sales is a critical component of the role in both local, national and international markets. This role is a an external-facing position and requires travel to key markets outside of BC (e.g., Toronto, Calgary, New York).

Organizational Status
Reports to the Manager, Business Development. Within the Business Career Centre, works closely with other Business Development team members and collaborates with Business Career Center employees. Within UBC Sauder, interacts with faculty as well as the business development teams of multiple units including: Recruitment and Admissions, the Development and Alumni Engagement and Professional Growth. Within UBC, interacts with UBC's Centre for Student Involvement & Careers and other faculty Co-op teams. Externally, engages with local, national and international employers and industry association representatives.

Work Performed

Campus Recruitment

  • Manages and grows the annual corporate campus recruitment campaign.

  • Working across the business development team's portfolios, identifies new, and retains current multinational institutions and corporations to run annual talent acquisition programs targeting student and new graduate talent.

  • Liaises with corporate talent acquisition managers to advise on the recruitment strategy, identify target student populations, and explore and confirm recruitment activities and events.

  • Ensures the recruitment strategy is successful, meeting and exceeding campaign targets.

  • Documents, evaluates and monitors student engagement and participation ensuring that job postings are accurately tagged and promoted to the correct target student audiences, and liaises internally to drive student participation.

  • Manages and deepens relationships and liaises with stakeholders to ensure satisfaction and engagement with the Business Career Centre and to promote the centre's objectives.

  • Regularly collects data and feedback from a broad range of sources and stakeholders to evaluate the overall strategy and effectiveness based on defined goals and metrics and implements changes as required.

  • Develops policies and procedures related to employer and student participation, and event management.

 

Experiential Learning

  • Actively recruits not for profit, charity and corporate entities for internship, mentorship and community business projects to grow experiential experience opportunities for students.

  • Provides advice and guidance to the employers on applications and pre-screening of the applicants.

  • Provides project management support across the business development team's portfolio for major experiential learning initiatives for both undergraduate and master level student programs.

  • Collaborates with faculty and business development managers on the execution of the programs and review of the program outcomes.

  • Supports the development of relating marketing and promotional materials.

Employer Portfolio Management

  • Manages a portfolio of industries, including relationship management of current accounts, prospecting and acquisition of new accounts.

  • Working with the Manager, Business Development, sets annual goals for the assigned portfolio and key account plans, and assists with the development of strategic business plans.

  • Maintains visible presence in the local market through in-person sales calls and execution of field sales campaigns as per the business plan in all markets.

  • Travels, as required, to key markets outside of BC for in-person client meetings and accompanying visiting groups of students.

  • Supports Business Development Managers with account management activities, including communications, research and overall client management.

  • Maintains up-to-date employer and employment outcome records in the CRM system.

  • Performs other duties within the guidelines of the role as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
This role represents UBC Sauder, the students and the University. Incorrect decisions/ judgement will directly affect UBC Sauder's and UBC's reputation with the employer community and future alumni of the faculty. Incorrect decisions would have impact on the employment of students, the operations of the programs, and the reputation of the school and the University.

Supervision Received
Works under general direction of the Manager, Business Development with considerable autonomy; results are subject to general review on completion.

Supervision Given
May supervise student employees and volunteers as required. Responsible for hiring, training and performance evaluation. Hires and manages contract work performed by outside suppliers and service providers.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of five years of related experience in an appropriate business specialization, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a sales/business development or relationship management role.

  • Experience and comfort with cold calling are an asset.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – written and verbal.

  • Computer skills required: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience with Salesforce is an asset.

  • Effective organizational, supervisory and presentation skills are required.

  • Must be available for evening events during Fall and Winter recruiting cycles.

  • A valid BC driver's license and regular access to a vehicle are essential.
