As a Systems Control Technician, you will be a key member of the Field Operations Control Systems team, supporting both field-based and centralized process control systems across the City's Drinking Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection, and Stormwater Collection systems. You will collaborate with Field Operations work groups such as: operations, project delivery, and operational engineering to support project design and execution, implement process control enhancements and contribute to process optimization efforts. This position focuses on Industrial Control Systems (ICS), process communication networks, process control configuration and maintenance. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Create and modify programmable logic controller (PLC) programs and Human Machine Interface (HMI) displays.
  • Maintain and upgrade Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) control systems.
  • Deploy and administer process control application servers and workstations, including virtualized environments.
  • Set up and manage OT (Operational Technology) network and communication systems including switches, routers, firewalls and automated security appliances.
  • Configure and maintain historian system and relational databases, visual user interfaces, compliance reporting applications.
  • Perform structured commissioning: I/O (Inputs/ Outputs) checks, scaling verification, alarm validation and documentation review.
  • Maintain backups, documentation and configuration baselines for all control systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve process upsets and control system issues, support other work groups through startups, shutdowns, and on-call events.

Qualifications

  • A completed 2-year technical diploma with at least 5 years of relevant experience that must include: service, installation, and implementation of industrial control systems.
  • Configuration and programming experience with Process Data Historians, Programmable Logical Controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Industrial Control Networking and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems is required.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with strong knowledge and demonstrated experience in:
  • Successful applicants must qualify and complete Confined Space Entry certification
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required
  • Success in this position requires strong communication with the ability to quickly and independently acquire new knowledge, skills and technologies and work collaboratively within a team.

Workstyle: This position requires regular travel to field facilities, primarily within the city limits or nearby surrounding areas, to support and troubleshoot control systems equipment. This position is required to work in confined spaces and is exposed to noise.

  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

work week Monday to Thursday, OR Tuesday to Friday from 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

Hours of work: Non-standard 40 hour work week
