Position: Pathologist

Position Vacancy: Department of Laboratory Medicine

The Department of Laboratory Medicine at Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) is seeking a full time Pathologist to join our existing team of 11.5 Pathologists providing surgical pathology and cytopathology services. The Pathology laboratory receives a wide variety of specimens, including breast, gastrointestinal, gynecological and genitourinary oncologic resections. Every year, our laboratory performs approximately 5 million tests. We are continually evolving to meet all inpatient and outpatient needs by making use of new analyzers with improved testing methods, automated systems, education for our staff, and efficient use of available resources. Our laboratory staff members include pathologists, hematopathologists, microbiologist, biochemist, pathologists' assistants, medical laboratory technologists, medical laboratory technicians, and administrative staff.

About us: Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) has 3 locations: Midtown, Queen's Blvd and Chicopee. WRHN functions as an integrated system with well-defined and complementary clinical programs to serve both the local community and the region. Each hospital site has acute care ER. Queen's Blvd Hospital is a Regional Cardiac Care Centre and a Centre of Excellence for Respiratory and Thoracic Care. Midtown Hospital hosts several regional programs including a Regional Cancer Centre, a Complex Malignant Hematology centre with an autologous stem cell transplant programme, Hepatobiliary Surgical Programme, and stroke, renal and mental health programmes. Our laboratory facilities are well equipped including a large menu of immunohistochemical stains and the anatomic pathology system is integrated with the hospital information systems. Our pathology practice includes a broad, rewarding case mix comprising surgical pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology. We are very excited to be currently validating and implementing Digital Pathology. The Pathologist group is also supported by a very experienced Pathologist Assistant (PA) group and affiliated with the PA program at Western University. The pathologist group also provides medical leadership for the clinical laboratory.

Position Requirements

  • License to practice independently in Ontario from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO);
  • Certification in either anatomical or general pathology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or American Board of Pathology Certified;
  • Experience in independent practice is a plus, though new graduates will also be considered.
  • Additional fellowship training in Hematopathology would be a particular asset as the successful candidate would be required to provide support to our busy Lymphoma, Malignant Hematology service and Benign Hematology programs.
  • Fellowship training or subspecialty expertise in breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary pathology and surgical pathology would be considered an asset, although all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
  • The applicant must also be a strong team player who has exceptional interpersonal and collaborative skills.
