**Position Summary**:
The priority for the Speech-Language Pathologist (S-LP) at St. Mary's General Hospital is dysphagia management. The S-LP works in conjunction with a Registered Dietitian as part of the Swallowing Team. S-LP services are primarily required in the medical and chest programs but the S-LP is a corporate resource for all patients.

**Position Requirements**:

- **Demonstrated commitment to the values of service, responsible stewardship, community responsiveness and respect.**:

- **Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent.**:

- **Active Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate or ability to obtain within 3 months and maintain**:

- **Registration with College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO)**:

- **Utilization of effective communication skills in interpersonal relationships with patients, families and other interdisciplinary team members.**:

- **Ability to function with mínimal to no supervision.**:

- **Knowledge and understanding of legislation, College regulation and standards of practice.**:

- **Ability to work in a team and as a member of the interdisciplinary team.**:

- **Demonstrated effective organizational, problem-solving and case management skills.**:

- **Demonstrated initiative and ability to make professional decisions based on clinical knowledge and skill and communicate effectively with the team.**:

- **Understanding and clinical experience with swallowing disorder in the adult population in acute care.**:

- **Experience conducting and interpreting video fluoroscopic swallow studies. MBS IMP Certified preferred.**:

- **Computer skills. Cerner an asset.**:

- **Ability to set priorities in a rapidly changing clinical environment**

**Position Responsibilities**:

- **Conducting clinical bedside swallowing assessments, outlining clinical recommendations and communicating changes or concerns to the health team members.**:

- **Conducting and interpreting video fluoroscopic swallow studies.**:

- **Conducting communication assessments and providing plans of care.**:

- **Prioritizing S-LP caseload to ensure that the needs of all patients are met.**:

- **Educating family, staff and multidisciplinary team members of the proposed plan and implications for safe feeding and potential alternate nutritional needs.**:

- **Working with health team members to plan, co-ordinate, implement and evaluate new initiatives for patient care.**:

- **Participating in interdisciplinary team conferences and discharge planning meetings.**:

- **Membership and participation on hospital committees (e.g., Unit Council), by direct attendance or by reviewing minutes.**:

- **Representing inter-professional committee (s)**:

- **Supporting peers in improving and developing new clinical skills..**:

- **Documenting using SMGH computerized Cerner system and in compliance with SMGH standards.**:

- **Consulting with community resources, to ensure appropriate discharge and continuity of care.**:

- **Consulting with interdisciplinary team members who are involved in the patient's plan of care to ensure effective outcomes with respect to safe swallowing are met.**:

- **Commitment to continuing education/best practice.**:

- **Participating in peer review process.**:

- **In-servicing staff on S-LP related topics, as time permits or as necessary.**:

- **Developing standards of care, teaching materials, policies and procedures, etc. as necessary.**:

- **Adherence to requirements for workload measurement system.
