Our programs are conducted in-person at our Labrador City learning centre, where small class sizes and individualized attention help students develop lasting academic confidence.

Position Overview

Hive Academy is seeking a qualified and passionate English & Reading Tutor to teach in-person literacy and language arts classes for Grades 1–12 at our Labrador City location.

The tutor will focus on reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills, following Hive Academy's structured curriculum.

This is a classroom-only position, ideal for an experienced educator who enjoys inspiring students through interactive and purposeful learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach small-group English and Reading classes (8–12 students) in a structured classroom setting.
  • Deliver engaging lessons in reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and vocabulary building.
  • Conduct and grade quizzes, essays, and workbook exercises using Hive Academy's curriculum materials.
  • Support students with personalized feedback and strategies for improvement.
  • Maintain attendance, grade records, and progress reports.
  • Communicate with parents and staff regarding student progress.
  • Foster a supportive, respectful, and stimulating classroom environment.
  • Follow Hive Academy's literacy teaching standards and safety protocols.

Qualifications & Requirements

Mandatory:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, English, Literature, Communication Arts, or Linguistics.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience teaching or tutoring English/Reading to Grades 1–12.
  • Strong mastery of grammar, reading comprehension, and writing instruction.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication.
  • Must pass a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada and physically located in Labrador City, NL (or willing to relocate).

Assets:

  • Familiarity with Canadian Language Arts curriculum, Kumon Reading
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Creative and enthusiastic approach to classroom engagement.

Work Schedule

  • Monday – Saturday: 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM
  • Sunday: As needed (paid at regular rate if scheduled)
  • Summer (June–August): Extended hours for summer literacy programs
  • Hourly Rate: To be discussed
  • Employment Type: Part-Time; follows Newfoundland & Labrador Labour Standards.
