Position Overview

Reporting to the President and CEO, the individual in this position will support and take responsibility for the Truth and Reconciliation efforts and initiatives at St. Boniface Hospital. They will work closely with SBH's Executive and Human Resources department and collaborate with the WRHA's Indigenous Health Services, and incorporate the learnings and feedback from the hospital's Truth and Reconciliation task force. The Truth and Reconciliation Specialist will ensure smooth integration of the Truth and Reconciliation program work into SBH's clinical and non-clinical operations.

The Truth and Reconciliation Specialist will support SBH's vision for truth and reconciliation that ensures the safety, care, and welcoming, compassionate treatment of all Indigenous patients, staff and community members in an ongoing manner; that offers ongoing openness to truth and provides continued opportunities to speak and hear truth; and respects, understands and collaborates with the Indigenous community.

Experience
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in Indigenous relations, engagement social accountability and or human rights.
  • Recent and related experience negotiating and facilitating discussions, leading to consensus with diverse groups such as Indigenous communities and organizations, senior managers, and decision influencers to build and grow engagement.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Post-secondary education in a related field (Project Management, Business Administration, Human Resources, Social Work, Psychology, Other); or have the relevant skills in combination with Indigenous cultural experience.
Qualifications and Skills
  • A person of Indigenous Ancestry with a strong Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racist lens and pursuant to Section 11 of the Manitoba Human Rights Code, preference will be given to applicants of Indigenous Ancestry.
  • Ability to navigate and translate both Indigenous and non-Indigenous worldviews, especially as these pertain to health and healthcare.
  • Awareness of the various First Nations, Inuit and Métis governance systems and processes.
  • Awareness of the various First Nations, Inuit and Métis traditions, ceremonies and how they work, Indigenous language, Indigenous leadership of Manitoba, tribal councils.
  • Deep understanding of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Calls to Justice of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls Report and other key reports that should or could inform SBH's work.
  • Work well with diverse groups and individuals to develop and maintain internal and external relationships while providing solution-based guidance.
  • Possess the talent to garner trust and build effective relationships while being open and approachable.
  • A critical and conceptual thinker with experience researching and reviewing issues and trends and can make recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Proven track record of extracting and aggregating meaningful information to make thoughtful recommendations that management and partners require to make impactful decisions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with other healthcare professionals and all levels of staff.

NOTE: An equivalent combination of education and experience, as deemed recognized by the Hospital may be considered in lieu of the above.

The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate's relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan.
