cQED Design Engineer

Bd de l'Université Sherbrooke QC JN J Canada Barrington James Full time

Job Description

Overview
Our client, a pioneering deep-tech company at the intersection of quantum science and photonics, is seeking a Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics (cQED) Design Engineer to join their high-impact R&D team in Canada. Backed by top-tier academic partnerships and cutting-edge fabrication capabilities, this company is developing advanced quantum hardware enabling next-generation signal processing, sensing, and quantum computing technologies.

As a cQED Design Engineer, you will lead the design, simulation, and optimization of superconducting quantum circuits and electromagnetic structures that form the backbone of scalable quantum systems. This role offers the opportunity to work hands-on with state-of-the-art tools, collaborate with world-class scientists and engineers, and contribute directly to innovations shaping the future of quantum hardware.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, model, and optimize superconducting quantum devices such as resonators, qubits, couplers, and waveguides for cQED architectures.

  • Perform full-wave and circuit-level EM simulations (microwave to mmWave) to validate device performance.

  • Translate circuit concepts into fabrication-ready layouts, ensuring compatibility with superconducting and nanofabrication processes.

  • Collaborate with quantum physicists, hardware engineers, and fabrication specialists to integrate devices into complex quantum systems.

  • Analyze performance trade-offs, optimizing for coherence time, Q-factor, coupling strength, impedance matching, and signal integrity.

  • Contribute to device characterization and experimental feedback loops, supporting rapid iteration and refinement.

  • Document designs, methodologies, and results in a rigorous and reproducible manner for internal use and publication.

What We're Looking For

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Quantum Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Proven experience with EM simulation tools (e.g., HFSS, CST, COMSOL, Sonnet, or similar).

  • Strong understanding of microwave engineering, superconducting circuit design, and cQED principles.

  • Familiarity with cleanroom layout tools, superconducting fabrication processes, and cryogenic measurement environments.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

  • Prior experience in quantum hardware development (superconducting qubits, quantum resonators, or related systems) is a strong advantage.

Following your application Chris Green, a specialist recruiter will discuss the opportunity with you in detail. Chris will be more than happy to answer any questions relating to the industry and the potential for your career growth. The conversation can also progress further to discussing other opportunities, which are also available right now or will be imminently becoming available.
