Reporting to the Director Food & Beverage Accounting, the Food & Beverage Controller will provide financial & administrative support for Freehand Hospitality & other restaurants in Downtown Halifax, optimize accounting processes, and support operational leaders with data-driven insights to achieve financial objectives ,including but not limited to, reconciliation of sales, other accounts reconciliations, and integration the accounting and POS systems.

As Food & Beverage Controller, you will:

  • Provide work direction and guidance for the Food & Beverage Accountants and Accounts Payable Specialist, fostering a culture of accuracy and accountability
  • Prepare accurate, timely financial statements in accordance with our established schedule.
  • Manage all aspects of the month-end closing process, including recording accruals, preparing and adjusting journal entries, and ensuring completeness and accuracyResponsible for Inter-company reconciliations.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in accounts.
  • Review and file HST for all operating entities
  • Maximize the use of accounting software (Sage Intacct) and manage integrations with the restaurant management system and POS platforms to ensure efficient data flow.
  • Assist in the compilation of annual budgets and periodic reforecasts for the Food & Beverage division.
  • Responsible for cash flow management of the division; forecasting cash flow needs of the business and any funding requirements, as well as when excess cash is available for investment.
  • Build relationships with restaurant managers and anticipate restaurant managers' needs.
  • Oversee inventory costing processes, investigate variances, and recommend actions to improve cost control and accuracy.
  • Assists restaurant management with analysis of actual versus budgeted results and assists in identifying cost efficiencies or opportunities that exist within the division.
  • Build relationships with restaurant management and staff.

What we're looking for:

  • Post-secondary degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related function. CPA Designation is an asset.
  • 7+ years of accounting experience; proficient in cost control, budgeting and reporting.
  • Proven ability to successfully lead teams.
  • Strong analytical skills with a high attention to detail
  • Effective organizational and time management skills with a focus on achieving deadlines
  • Prior experience in the food & beverage or hospitality industry is considered an asset
