BACKGROUND

WUSC is a Canadian global development organization working to catalyze positive education and economic outcomes for young people. We bring together and collaborate with a diverse network of partners (including students, volunteers, schools, governments, not-for-profits, and businesses) who share this mission. Together, we influence systems change, and foster inclusive, youth-centered solutions that enable young people to thrive and belong. We work with all young people, with a focus on women and displaced populations.  WUSC currently operates in 28 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in Canada, with an annual budget of approximately CAD $65 million. Our global team includes over 100 staff in Canada and more than 250 staff internationally, implementing a diverse portfolio of development projects in collaboration with numerous multilateral and bilateral donors, and philanthropic foundations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the CFO, the Director Corporate Finance will be responsible for the integrity of WUSC's financial information and timely and accurate financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders.  The Director Corporate Finance will ensure compliance with Canadian and international accounting principles and best practices, statutory and regulatory requirements and support the organization's risk management processes including internal audit. 

Corporate Accounting

  • Manages the full cycle accounting process including month end close and reconciliations
  • Prepares consolidated financial statements and reviews and supports the preparation of local statutory financial statements in the countries of operation
  • Manages the external financial statements audit processes including the consolidated financial statement audit in Canada as well as the various country based financial statement audits 
  • Prepares internal financial reports including variance analysis for senior management
  • Maintains the chart of accounts 
  • Maintains and develops policies, guidelines and procedures for financial activities to improve systems, increase efficiency, and comply with GAAP and CRA regulations;
  • Provides training and guidance to employees including field staff on financial policies and procedures; 
  • Supports the treasury management process including cash flow forecasting
  • Ensures timely and accurate filing of statutory reporting including regulatory, tax and other filings
  • Manages the corporate insurance process
  • Supports the donation processing process to ensure compliance with CRA regulations

Budgeting

  • Leads the annual organizational budgeting process
  • Develops forecasts and scenario plans
  • Supports the workforce planning process 

Risk Management

  • Supports the CFO in internal risk assessment processes, including completion of the annual risk register and quarterly risk reviews and ensuring mitigation measures are in place and effective
  • Develops and implement comprehensive risk management strategies, policies and procedures to identify, assess, mitigate and monitor risks across the organization
  • Supports organizational risk management process through alignment to WUSC's Risk Management Framework and Policy, providing guidance and support across the organization in implementing risk mitigation measures 
  • Acts as internal subject matter expert on Risk Management practices, including establishing contexts, identifying risks, analyzing, evaluating and addressing risk mitigation 
  • Develops and implements comprehensive internal control policies and procedures, including build out of internal controls within an ERP and other digital systems

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

Education

  • Master degree in Finance, Accounting or a related field
  • Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation is required

Experience & Competencies

  • A minimum of Ten (10) years accounting, risk management, and/or audit experience with at least five (5) years audit experience 
  • A minimum of five  (5) years full cycle accounting in a supervisory role.
  • Previous not-for-profit experience considered an asset
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting standards and compliance with statutory requirements in the Canadian charity sector
  • Experience in budgeting and forecasting 
  • Experience developing and implementing financial policies and procedures
  • Ability to communicate and effectively engage and influence at all levels of the organization
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.  
  • Capacity to identify and articulate potential problems and provide possible solutions in a concise and clear manner.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, work independently, and take initiative.
  • Curious, enthusiastic and willing to innovate and adapt.
  • Experience with Netsuite, Dynamics GP and/or SAGE50 considered an asset

Languages

  • Complete fluency in English and French is required.
