Pharmacy Technician, Veterinary Medical Centre

Primary Purpose: To work under the supervision of a Pharmacist in the provision of pharmaceuticals and perform tasks basic to a hospital Pharmacy ensuring excellent customer service and efficient operation.  

Nature of Work: Reporting Manager, Operations, this position is located in a busy veterinary hospital pharmacy with high noise levels, some unpleasant odors, a dress code and traffic pattern restrictions. May experience above average temperatures due to the equipment output. This position is subject to call back on evenings and weekends.  

Typical Duties: Responsible for the acquisition, receiving, preparation, checking and distribution of medications and pharmaceutical products and supplies within the WCVM Veterinary Medical Centre. Responsible for packaging, monitoring narcotic and controlled drugs for accuracy, preparation of parenteral fluids; compounding both sterile and non-sterile products, maintaining accurate written and computerized records; entering and collecting information on a computerized inventory system to perform the assigned inventory maintenance tasks; responding to requests for service/information as required; general housekeeping and other duties as assigned.  

Education: Graduate of a recognized Pharmacy Technician Program and Licensed in good standing or able to be licensed with the College of Pharmacy Professionals preferred. Experience: 3 to 5 years of related experience in a pharmacy, veterinary clinic, or hospital pharmacy.  

Skills: Knowledge of and experience with pharmaceuticals, biosafety cabinets, sterile and non-sterile preparation, and compounding, replenish and monitor automated dispensing cabinets and delivering to locations. Ensure compliance with all federal and provincial  

legislation for narcotic and controlled drugs; assist to ensure appropriate response to drug recall is completed effectively; meticulous attention to detail. Excellent computer data entry skills; ability to function both independently and as part of a team; demonstrate effective organization and time management skills; proven ability to manage multiple projects with competing demands to meet deadlines; effective problem solving skills with ability to anticipate, be self-directed and deal positively and effectively with stressful situations; effective interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal) required to foster and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel; ability to analyze new situations and apply existing standards and procedures appropriately and the ability perform moderate to heavy physical lifting and carrying.
