Community Outreach Support Volunteer

Reports To:

Peer Navigator and ROAR Leadership

Role Purpose

Community Outreach Support Volunteers assist ROAR Peer Navigators during community outreach by helping raise awareness of ROAR services, engaging respectfully with community members, and supporting safe, culturally grounded outreach practices.

This role exists to support, not replace, the Peer Navigator role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accompany a Peer Navigator during outreach shifts
  • Engage respectfully with community members to share information about ROAR services
  • Support relationship-building and trust in community spaces
  • Observe surroundings and help maintain situational awareness
  • Assist with distributing information or supplies as directed

Safety & Boundaries (Non-Negotiable)

  • Volunteers must never perform outreach alone
  • Volunteers must remain within earshot of the Peer Navigator at all times
  • Volunteers may not separate from their outreach partner for any reason
  • Outreach occurs only during approved shifts
  • Volunteers follow ROAR safety protocols without exception

Required Experience

This is not an entry-level volunteer role.

Applicants must have experience in one or more of the following:

  • Community outreach
  • Harm reduction or peer support
  • Indigenous community work
  • Social services, shelters, or frontline support

Personal Qualities Required

  • Strong boundaries
  • Emotional regulation
  • Trauma-informed, non-judgmental approach
  • Cultural humility and respect
  • Ability to follow direction

What This Role Does NOT Include

Volunteers do not:

  • Provide counselling
  • Conduct assessments
  • Intervene in crises
  • Transport community members
  • Handle money or sensitive decisions

Time Commitment

  • Set outreach shifts
  • Flexible scheduling across 7 days per week
  • Shifts typically 5 hours
  • Minimum commitment discussed during onboarding

Eligibility

  • Practicum students welcome
  • Must agree to ROAR Volunteer Agreement & Code of Conduct

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Permanent, Casual, Freelance, Apprenticeship, Internship / Co-op

Contract length: 12 months
