As the Branch Head Librarian, you will have the exciting opportunity to manage a library branch and actively promote the services of Winnipeg Public Library for the City of Winnipeg.
As the Branch Head Librarian, you will:
- Supervise the work of the Branch staff including training and evaluating their performance
- Plan and schedule the work within the Branch
- Provide information and reference services to adults and children
- Participate in collection maintenance and development, ensuring proper processing and repair of materials and book sale as required
- Participate in the preparation, delivery and/or promotion of library materials, and services such as regular story hours, Branch programs, displays, etc.
- Prepare monthly statistical reports
- Make recommendations regarding the maintenance and physical appearance of the Branch
- Handle contentious interpretations of library rules and regulations
- Participate as a member of a group of colleagues in discussing and making recommendations regarding library procedures
- Identify community needs and plan programs and collection development to meet those needs
- Engage with the community to build Library awareness
- Perform other duties consistent with the classification, as required
Your education and qualifications include:
A Master of Library & Information Sciences (MLIS) degree from an institution accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). An MLIS degree (or equivalent) obtained internationally through a formally accredited institution may also be considered.
Previous library experience considered an asset.
Must possess a broad subject knowledge and have a good general knowledge of reference materials and technologies.
Ability to evaluate and integrate the use of information technologies in the provision of library services.
Ability to plan and provide quality programs for adults.
Ability to make presentations and promote library materials, services and programs to the community.
Ability to deal effectively with the public and staff on a problem-solving basis.
Ability to work as a member of a team and to maintain effective working relationships.
Strong planning and organizational skills.
A strong commitment to public service and the ability to work with a diverse patronage.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy.
IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Applicants submitting foreign credentials require an official academic assessment report issued by a recognized Canadian assessment service at application.
