Water Truck Operator

SUMMARY
The Water Truck Operator is a program support position that is supervised on a regular basis by the Public Works Supervisor with overall accountability to the Director of Lands and Infrastructure. This position is for operating a water delivery truck. The operator will be responsible for the following: hauling potable water to residential units situated on Zagimé and Shesheep reserve on a scheduled basis; filling out log sheets for delivery, vehicle mileage and servicing records; filing reports with the housing department on maintenance requirements of the holding tanks, etc. be able to perform minor maintenance tasks on vehicles and equipment when necessary. The operator will also be responsible for ensuring compliance and awareness of established policies, procedures, and practices of the band.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Directly responsible for operating a water delivery truck for the purpose of providing consistent water delivery service.
- Ensuring that potable water is delivered to the designated households on a regular schedule basis.
- Maintaining the water hauling log sheet as well as the band vehicle log book.
- Following regular maintenance tasks for vehicle land equipment as per the annual maintenance requirements.
- Advising the housing department of the maintenance requirements for holding tanks etc. or irregularities in water usage at each respective household that is provided with the water delivery service.
- Assisting the community health nurse and or representative in obtaining water samples and advise of any health and safety issues.
- Assisting in minor maintenance tasks as directed by supervisor to the water treatment plant facility and equipment.
- Complying with all workplace health and safety measures in regards to the sanitation of water tanks as well as the applicable legislation and guidelines for opening a tandem axle water delivery truck.
- Any other job related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Qualifications
- A class 1 "A" drivers license and have at least 1 year of practical experience operating a tandem axle truck.
- Ability to perform minor maintenance task on equipment as well as being able to provide preventative maintenance techniques for major maintenance tasks.
- Willing and able to perform heavy lifting and physical labour during the course of duties.
- Able to complete a daily log of activities as well as maintaining the water-hauling log to respective household.
- Excellent time management skills to be able to provide water delivery service within the established schedule.
- Be aware of safety standards for equipment and water quality and wear the appropriate protective clothing and equipment necessary when operating band equipment and/or vehicles.
- Have a pleasant, professional manner as well as being punctual, reliable, and ensure that confidential matters remain confidential.
- Have sound knowledge of how a Public Works department is operated.
- Excellent people skills in order to maintain a positive report with supervisors, other employees, house holders, and the general membership.
- Ability to effectively communicate, both written and oral.
- Ability to follow policy, take direction and work with minimum supervision.
- Willing to work flexible hours and be on call in case of emergencies.
- Willing to learn how the water treatment plant is operated and maintained. Must be able to read plant gauges in order to assist the Public Works Supervisor in preventative maintenance measures.
- Willing to submit to a pre-employment drug screening due to the operation of heavy equipment.
