The City of Calgary is committed to preserving and enhancing natural infrastructure as a key part of our climate adaptation strategy. These natural systems provide multiple benefits, from water retention to urban heat reduction. As a Corporate Environmental Specialist, Climate Adaptation and Natural Assets, you will lead efforts to advance natural infrastructure related actions in the Calgary Climate Strategy. You will develop and implement programs and tools that reflect the value of ecosystem services and the holistic benefits provided by natural infrastructure, helping to support a climate resilient city. Primary duties include:

  • Plan, lead and deliver the natural infrastructure program by collaborating with relevant business units and staff at various levels across the Corporation.
  • Integrate natural asset valuation into City systems such as asset management, financial reporting, and planning. Work with experts at all levels to develop standards and share Calgary's leadership in this area.
  • Provide technical expertise on natural asset valuation and climate adaptation.
  • Maintain and improve tools that help measure and report the value of natural assets.
  • Work in a team environment and assist the organization in its efforts to identify, measure and report on climate adaptation and natural asset indicators and metrics.
  • Support the integration of adaptation actions in the Climate Strategy: Pathways to 2050 across the Corporation.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Ecology, Biology, Climate Adaptation, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of practical experience in program management, including at least 3 years of professional experience in natural infrastructure program or project development and delivery.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is essential.
  • A master's degree in a related field would be considered an asset.
  • Experience working with ArcGIS and with spatial data sets would be considered an asset.
  • Previous work in the areas of land use planning, natural asset valuation, ecosystem services, parks asset management, natural areas asset management, and/or green infrastructure would be considered assets.
  • Proven abilities in critical thinking, research and analysis, strategic planning, collaboration and relationship-building, and data analysis.

Working Conditions: Occasional site visits / field work may involve outdoor or hazardous conditions.

  • This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. Such arrangements are based on the operational requirements of the position and employee suitability and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
