Position Summary

The Level 2C NICU at Credit Valley Hospital provides family-centred, specialized care to newborns requiring enhanced monitoring and supportive therapies (e.g., oxygen therapy, CPAP, short-term ventilation, and specialized feeding plans). The unit features approximately 48 bassinets, care-by-parent rooms, and multidisciplinary neonatal services with strong breastfeeding support and on-site follow-up clinics.

The Clinical Educator for the Level 2C NICU is a practice leader and change agent who builds capacity across the interprofessional team to deliver safe, high-quality, family-centred neonatal care. Reporting to the Director, Women's & Children's Program and collaborating closely with the Clinical Manager and Medical Lead for NICU, the Educator designs, delivers, and evaluates orientation, competency validation, ongoing education, and simulation; translates evidence into practice; and advances quality, safety, and equity initiatives across a high-volume Level 2C NICU.  This role also supports organizational education and practice priorities, including teaching THP's General Orientation for all new staff, Accreditation, and any new practice initiative that aligns with THP organizations strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Education & Practice Support

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive orientation, transition-to-practice, and annual competency programs for NICU nurses and interprofessional staff (e.g., NRP refreshers, ventilation/CPAP competencies, feeding/EBP bundles).
  • Provide high-touch bedside coaching, simulation, and just-in-time teaching to support safe neonatal care, escalation protocols, and family-centred practices.
  • Develop and update clinical learning materials and standards, aligning with provincial Level 2C guidance and THP policies.
  • Participate in the delivery of THP general orientation, Accreditation initiative, and organizational practice/ education implementations.
  • Collaborate in building and maintaining medical directives, policies, and procedures that reflect evidence-based best practices.

Quality, Safety & Evidence-Based Practice

  • Embed best practices and clinical pathways; lead audits, huddles, and PDSA cycles to improve outcomes (e.g., thermoregulation, IV infiltrations, feeding readiness, apnea/bradycardia events).
  • Support incident review/learning, data-informed decision-making, and sustainment of improvements.

Workforce Development & Mentorship

  • Coach novice nurses, clinical externs, and internationally educated nurses; foster a culture of curiosity, psychological safety, and continuous learning across shifts.
  • Act as a resource and mentor for staff development, supporting career progression and professional growth.

Interprofessional & System Collaboration

  • Partner with the Clinical Manager, Medical Lead, neonatal practitioners, and allied health to align education with clinical priorities, patient flow, and transfer protocols; liaise with regional partners for coordinated care.

Digital & Documentation Excellence

  • Champion effective use of Epic (THP's Electronic Health Information System) to support standardized documentation, learning workflows, and data capture for quality metrics.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO); BScN required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Health, or Adult Education required.
  • Minimum 5 years recent NICU/perinatal experience (Level 2/3), with demonstrated clinical expertise in neonatal stabilization, respiratory support, and feeding.
  • 3+ years in an a formal instructor or education role is preferred
  • Current NRP certification; strong neonatal assessment and critical thinking skills; proven bedside coaching and facilitation capabilities.
  • NRP Instructor status required (or evidence of working toward completion).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult education principles; ability to teach in classroom, simulation, and clinical settings; advanced communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience designing and evaluating programs that embed leading practices into daily care; commitment to quality improvement and equity-focused care.
  • Digital literacy and proficiency with Epic or similar HIS.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • CAPWHN membership or neonatal specialty certification.
  • Experience with Level 2C/Level 3 neonatal transfer protocols and regional collaboration.
  • Lactation education/IBCLC or advanced breastfeeding support training.
  • RNAO Best Practice Champion designation.
  • Experience leading simulation-based education and Epic super-user training.
