If you're a seasoned journalist who thrives in the fast lane, believes in the power of public broadcasting to connect Canadians coast-to-coast-to-coast, and is ready to lead a team that serves Canadian audiences with a daily dose of informative and engaging audio, this is your shot at a game changing leadership role.
CBC News is searching for an Executive Producer, Syndicated Audio, to lead a team of cross-Canada journalists who support more than 60 radio programs across six time zones. Our team's values are your DNA.
We are responsive and on top of the big stories of the day.
We help Canadians make sense of the world, connecting audiences to stories and guests that resonate with their community, their country and their world.
We offer a fresh take.
In this senior role, you are responsible for ensuring we create and distribute objective and factual content that is informed by news of the day to local radio programs across the country. You're a change leader who prioritizes communication, feedback and continuous improvement. Building relationships is at the core of everything you do, including with your team, freelancers and the programmers we support.
What you'll be doing:
As a top-tier leader, you'll be front and centre in our audio strategy, driving innovation and connection. In this role, you'll:
Lead with Impact: You bring your A-game everyday, guiding and inspiring a talented team of producers and editors, setting the daily editorial tone for our daily content offer. You ensure we are responsive when big stories break, and you help develop strategies to be on top of those stories across the day, or in days ahead.
Mentor & Develop: Provide strong editorial leadership, offering clear direction, constructive feedback, and growth opportunities to a large team of journalists. You cultivate a high-performing, collaborative, and respectful work culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute.
Champion Audience Growth: Your editorial decisions are focused on expanding our reach, particularly to new and younger news consumers, and to deepen our engagement with all Canadians. You understand the pulse of Canadian audiences and their habits, and translate insights and data into actionable content strategies for our local morning and afternoon programs, including their livestreams.
Foster Authentic Storytelling: You champion content that truly reflects the richness and diversity of perspectives, ideas, and real-life experiences across Canada. You inspire your team to think inclusively, always asking whose voice is missing and you work diligently to close that gap, whether that's with the guest we are booking or in the taped items we share. You collaborate with journalistic leaders across CBC News, ensuring Canadians hear themselves reflected in our daily coverage.
Innovate & Strategize: With your deep understanding of the constantly evolving radio and audio landscape and emerging streaming trends, you're instrumental in updating and communicating the unit's strategy to ensure alignment with the goals of CBC News. You translate big ideas into tangible actions, always focused on helping the audience immerse themselves in the audio experience.
Uphold Journalistic Excellence: Ensure all content adheres to CBC's rigorous Journalistic Standards and Practices, navigating complex ethical and legal considerations with grace and precision.
We're looking for someone who:
Has at least five years of recent, significant leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment, particularly in roles involving breaking news and large teams. Experience in local current affairs is an asset.
Demonstrates a proven passion for impactful journalism, critical thinking, and innovative storytelling across multiple platforms. You're not just reporting the news; you're shaping how it's consumed.
Is an astute strategist, capable of translating audience insights and data into effective content decisions and programming results.
Has strong coaching and mentorship skills, with a track record of developing talent and fostering a positive, inclusive, and equitable work environment.
Is comfortable navigating rapid change, troubleshooting complex situations, and making swift decisions under pressure.
Brings a deep and nuanced understanding of Canadian politics, world events, geography, and history, coupled with strong cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Instills in their team that Canadians are very interested in learning more about each other, and recognizes the universal appeal of good stories.
Exhibits stellar communication and collaboration skills, essential for working across diverse teams and regions.
Has a university degree or equivalent professional experience.
Is flexible to work varying hours, including early mornings, nights, and holidays, to respond to the demands of a live programming cycle.
This is a permanent, full-time position based in Toronto. You are expected to be on-site most days, however there is opportunity for hybrid work on occasion.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next
step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:
A mandatory Criminal record check.
Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
