Position Description

Responsibilities

  • Providing an appropriate model of academic English Language Learning through direct assistance in individual, small group, or classroom settings.
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of EAL programming to improve English Language Learners communicative competence and academic performance (listening/understanding, speaking, reading and writing).
  • Assisting students to adjust to the Canadian social environment and school setting through orientation activities.
  • Assisting families in completing and understanding forms and/or documents.
  • Assisting with collection, distribution and preparation of instructional and assessment materials to support students' English language development.
  • Providing practice activities to reinforce the language used in classroom experiences and lessons.
  • Communicating information about the school and school programming, student achievement to the parents/guardians of EAL students. Receives information that may impact the student's programming.
  • Sharing observational data about student progress with the teacher, learning team, and parents/guardians.
  • Performing other related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school completion supplemented with English as a Second Language (ESL)/EAL Level I Training Certificate or the equivalent education in the provision of ESL/EAL services.
  • ESL/EAL certification level II preferred.
  • One year of related experience working with children.
  • An equivalent combination of directly related post-secondary education and directly related experience may be considered.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.
  • Proficiency in another language is an asset.
  • Understanding of specific language and cultural background of students being served.
  • Success in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work effectively as an active team member in cooperation with otherschool personnel, parents/guardians, therapists, instructional resource personnel, and students.
  • Ability to establish trust and rapport with students.
  • Comfort and competency working with personal computers and other technologies to support student learning.
  • Commitment to lifelong learning and willingness to regularly enhance skills and knowledge for professional development.
  • Good organizational skills, time management skills and pacing skills to support student scheduling.
  • Ability to respect and value all individuals with sensitivity to diversity.
  • Strong verbal, listening and communication skills.
  • Personal suitability.
