Personal Support Worker

Starting Wage: Will be determined based on experience, and will include $0.50/km paid mileage

Job Summary

We are seeking a part time Personal Support Worker to cover Sunday morning/evening and Monday evening shifts. The successful candidate will be directly employed by the individuals families.

The Support Worker is responsible for providing assistance to three adult males, in order to enable them to live independently and access the community for leisure and recreational activities. The Support Worker will report directly to the Team Lead and families, and collaborate with them to ensure their family members needs are met. These gentleman have developmental disabilities, are able-bodied, and require a one-to-one support model while in the community – to ensure their engagement and safety.

Work Hours and Location

Work will occur Sunday and Monday, with the opportunity to pick up additional shifts, depending on staff availability and scheduling. Support will be provided primarily within the home and community. Transportation to and from the home, located within the city will be required.

Key Responsibilities

• Act in the best interest of the individuals
• Ensure the individuals are treated with dignity and respect
• Support the individuals to participate in meaningful community activities of their interest and connect with other people who share those interests
• Support the individuals to utilize community resources and opportunities (e.g. recreational centers, libraries, community spaces etc.)
• Provide transportation to employment, community areas and programs
• Maintain ongoing contact with the families through proactive communication strategies, including; in-person meetings, phone calls, and email
• Provide reminders regarding personal hygiene
• Assist with light housekeeping duties, and proving reminders and training on performing these tasks to the residents
• Prepare meals, using the menu plan provided, with the assistants of the residents
• Administer medication as required

Essential Attributes and Qualifications

• A highly developed sense of ethics and professionalism
• An understanding of advocacy; in theory and practice
• Physical ability/conditioning, to support an active schedule
• Experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities
• Willingness and ability to work with independence in the community – while maintaining consistent communication with the family
• The ability to view an individual from a strength versus deficit-based standpoint
• Excellent problem-solving capabilities
• The ability to manage confidential and/or sensitive information
• Strong English verbal and written communication skills
• A valid Class 5 driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle with valid insurance is preferred, coverage of at least $2,000,000 liability; or an excellent understanding of the Grande Prairie Transit system

Desirable Attributes and Qualifications

• Past or current training in Abuse Reporting and Response Protocol, as well as Restrictive Practices
• Historical background supporting adults with developmental disabilities
• A solid understanding of challenges facing adults with disabilities
• A love for walking and enjoying the outdoors
• Experience working with PDD-funded services and/or Family Managed Services (FMS)
• Current certification in First Aid/CPR
• A current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
