Employment Opportunity: Service Navigator    Location: Halifax, NS  Salary Range: $ 56,000.00 Employment Term: January 2026 -March 31, 2026 (possibility of Annual renewal), Full time hours (35 hours/ week),  Reports To: Housing Program Manager    General Description:  Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for One (1) Service Navigator (SN).  As a part of the Housing team, The Service Navigator is primarily responsible for being the first point of contact for all clients seeking housing support at the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre. This position requires administrative skills and experience with completing assessments, creating forms, and inputting data. The Service Navigator will be completing initial intakes twice per week for the housing drop-in and triage new clients to the appropriate housing team member. This position will not have a client caseload but work with all new clients to access the services and support that are most appropriate for their unique needs Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilize and maintain the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre's (MNFC) database. 
  • Build relationships with clients and work collaboratively with them to achieve their goals while prioritizing client autonomy and choice 
  • Complete documentation for the By-Name-List (BNL) and submit all new clients who consent to have their information shared to the BNL.  
  • Offer information on emergency and community resources to clients.  
  • Participate in agency responsibilities including but not limited to; team meetings, representing the agency at community meetings, safety, and monitoring.   
  • Work collaboratively with all team members and partnering agencies to achieve desired excellent service and outcomes 
  • Maintain confidentiality, privacy and clear boundaries. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills. 
  • Will be required to work on call for one week of a rotational on call schedule 
  • Compile statistics and data that will assist with the outcomes and evaluation of this housing initiative 
  • Commit to the development of the MNFC and participate in internal committees, projects and activities 
  • Assist in program and service development to ensure that quality, effective and client-centred programs and services are delivered 

Qualifications:
  • Diploma / certification in community social services and/ or office administration; or education in mental health, addictions, concurrent disorders/ co-occurring disorders and social work. 
  • One year of recent, related work experience with an emphasis on administrative skills Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience 
  • Comprehensive understanding of Indigenous, women's, trans gender issues, poverty, homelessness and their root causes 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of community resources, programs, services including ESIA, local/ provincial housing, subsidy programs and residential tenancy rights and regulations 
  • Knowledge in Indigenous ways of knowing and being considered an asset. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (word, excel, outlook, access, power point)  
  • Core Competency Training an asset: Mental Health First Aid, ASIST and NVCI 
  • Required Vulnerable Sector Check & Child Abuse Registrar must be provided prior to start of position. 
  • Indigenous Ancestry considered an asset
