Position Overview

About the Role

Are you serious about getting hands-on experience in the environmental and earth science fields and learning more about a career in local government? The District of North Vancouver has an exciting summer opportunity to assist in various environmental-related projects and duties.

Working with the members of the Environmental Sustainability team, you will undertake a variety of environmental and technical activities including administrative tasks as well as outdoor work in the field. Sample duties could include doing site inspections (tree, erosion and sediment control and final building inspections) as well as answering questions from the public and doing routine administrative work. In addition, the student will assist with emergency spill response calls and will support staff to do public outreach pertaining to environment issues. The student also helps to get the yearly Urban Tree Canopy project going and assists with all aspects of this important project.

Qualifications

Please note this position is contingent on funding through the Canada Summer Jobs Program which provides wage subsidies to employers to create quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years of age, and has the following criteria:

  • Be between the age of 15 and 30 years of age and be legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid SIN, be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act)
  • Not hold another full-time (30 or more hours) summer job.

Qualifications continued:

  • Have a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
  • Have a working knowledge of native tree and plant species, invasive species control, and local ecosystems.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Capable of analyzing construction and landscape drawings and the ability to assess fish habitat.
  • Ability to install and read environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Be able to work independently in the field for up to one day, including navigating riparian terrain.

Details

Salary: The pay range for this unionized position is $27.30 per hour (2024 rates)

Hours of Work: 35-hour work week (Compressed work schedule available). Monday to Friday, 8:00am-4:00pm
