The Opportunity

The Saskatchewan Marshals Service (SMS) is seeking a community-minded, experienced Cultural Liaison to assist in strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the diverse communities we serve.

Reporting to the Inspector of First Nations and Metis Policing, this role will play a crucial part in enhancing the cultural competency of SMS staff and strengthening partnerships with new and diverse Canadians and Indigenous communities. The successful candidate will provide cultural insight, guidance, and recommendations to officers and leadership.

As the Cultural Liaison, you will:

  • Provide in-depth knowledge and understanding of new and diverse communities, First Nations and Metis people, their cultures, communities, political structures, processes, opportunities and challenges at a local, regional, provincial and national level;
  • Research and consult with internal and external stakeholders to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate SMS policies and programs, review frameworks and lead development of cultural engagement strategies for the SMS;
  • Act as a community and family Laison for the SMS during critical events and crisis;
  • Provide recommendations, advice and consult with SMS senior leadership on partnerships, strategies, policies and programs that affect Saskatchewan Indigenous people and communities;
  • Organize learning opportunities for SMS sworn and civilian members;
  • Assist with cultural recruitment, assessments, and processing of applicants;
  • Building and implementation of special initiatives for operational policing.

Ideal Candidate:

As the SMS Cultural Liaison, you will have skills or knowledge in:

  • Facilitation of cultural education and programming within diverse and Indigenous communities;
  • Supporting the recruitment, assessment, and processing of police applicants;
  • Cultural knowledge as an Indigenous person, and/or reflected through lived experience, traditional teachings, and/or the role cultural facilitator;
  • Background in policing or relevant public safety work, with an ability to support community safety initiatives;
  • Ability to respond effectively in high-stress situations, and provide insight into Northern Saskatchewan communities.

Typically, the knowledge for this position is obtained through a bachelor's degree in social work, or human service degrees (human justice, Indigenous studies) and/or relevant work/policing experience. Experience in Indigenous language and working in a law enforcement environment is considered a strong asset.
