About Us:

The Edmonton Gleaners Association, more commonly known as Edmonton's Food Bank, was formed in 1981. To Glean means "to gather by patient harvest." The original mandate of the organization was to gather surplus food from stores and other members of the food industry, such as breads and pastries, fruits and vegetables, and distribute this food to other organizations like soup kitchens and shelters.

While some individuals and families receive food and other services directly from the Food Bank, the organization is a central warehouse and referral central that works with and distributes food to over 380 schools, shelters, agencies, food depots, and other organizations. From the beginning the Food Bank saw itself as an association that would work collaboratively with, and on behalf of, a network of social service organizations regarding food gleaning (food recovery), food drives, and client referral.

The mission of Edmonton's Food Bank is to be stewards in the collection of surplus and donated food for the effective distribution, free of charge, to people in need in our community while seeking solutions to the causes of hunger.
