A Cultural Support Worker provides both direct and indirect supports to children, youth and families wishing to have a greater connection to Indigenous culture, language and world view. Through 1 to 1 conversations, workshops, sharing circles, regular practice of Indigenous ceremony, the Cultural Support Worker will ensure children, youth and families have the support they need to fully engage with their Indigeneity and/or explore aspects of Indigenous culture that will be supportive to them.
**Note: This position has varying shifts and requires flexibility of hours to meet the needs of the children, youth and families we work with.**
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, customs and beliefs
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate and/or assist in the history of Indigenous Peoples, Cultural Teachings/Ceremonies, Sacred Family Circles/Family Group conferences
- Good understanding of cultural differences and how they impact wellness approaches for children, youth and parents
- Previous experience working with children, youth and families
- An understanding of health-related issues affecting children, youth and parents, such as FASD, drug and alcohol addictions, intergenerational trauma, mental health, suicide and other behavioral issues
- Good verbal and written communication skills with proven organization and documentation skills
- Gather information from the family on their experiences, connections and what is important to them and what connections can be built on to strengthen support to the children, youth and family.
- Knowledge of Indigenous language(s) will be a definite asset
- Mandatory trainings as outlined by the Canadian Accreditation Council and/or the commitment to complete them upon hire
- Demonstrated ability to develop cultural plans for the service team to use including ideas for removing barriers
- Promote relationships with Bands and facilitate children, youth and families connection/travel to their Bands
- Act as a cultural resource and support as required, to promote healing and reconciliation for children, youth and families.
**Collaboration**:
- Work in collaboration with service teams to support children, youth and parents in achieving their Cultural goals
- Collaborate with the programming team in providing support as needed and/or requested
- Collaborate with Children’s Services and other community agencies
**Administrative**:
- Timely, accurate, appropriate documentation of all client interaction
- Ensure accuracy and legible documentation is completed in a timely manner
- Clearly record observations
- Attend court as required and/or requested
- Documentation of all necessary information
- Provide documentation to the supervisor as required and/or requested
- Ensure that cultural plans are completed within the timelines provided
