Coordinator, Employment & Language Pathways (STEP)
Temporary Full-Time | Hybrid – Edmonton
Contract End is Nov 30, 2027.
Connector. Collaborator. Builder.
You bring people and systems together. Guiding your teams, employers, and partners to co-create practical, language-informed employment pathways that help newcomers build stability and independence.
About the Role
The Coordinator, Employment & Language Pathways leads a multidisciplinary team that supports special visa holders and refugee claimants with limited English proficiency as they strengthen language, employment, and life skills through the Skills through Training, Employment & Pathways (STEP) program.
Reporting to the Manager, Employment Services, this role combines program coordination, supervision, and partnership development to deliver integrated services that are trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and aligned with funder outcomes and organizational priorities.
The Coordinator ensures the team is supported, programs are delivered with care and accountability, and partnerships with employers and community organizations translate into meaningful employment and learning opportunities for participants.
About the STEP Program
Skills through Training, Employment & Pathways (STEP) supports special visa holders and refugee claimants who are ineligible for federally funded settlement programs. STEP offers English language instruction, employment preparation, and individualized support to help participants gain workplace skills, build confidence, and connect to sustainable employment or further education. The program operates year-round through a continuous intake model and two service streams—language-focused and employment-focused, serving approximately 500 participants annually.
What You'll Do
- Lead and coordinate delivery of the STEP program, aligning services with funder expectations and organizational goals.
- Supervise and coach a team of Career Practitioners, Employer Partnership Specialists, Language Instructors, and Administrative staff.
- Foster collaboration between employment and language teams to ensure participants experience seamless, integrated support.
- Build and maintain relationships with employers, training providers, and community partners to expand opportunities for participants.
- Monitor program activities, outcomes, and use client database systems, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
- Contribute to proposal development, budget monitoring, evaluation, and renewal planning.
- Represent the Newcomer Centre at sector tables, working groups, and collaborative networks.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous learning within the program.
What It Takes
A balance of structure and flexibility, able to plan, adapt, and lead through complexity with confidence and care. Strong communication and relationship skills, and the ability to see how systems, policies, and partnerships connect to create better outcomes for people.
You demonstrate
- Collaboration and cultural sensitivity in building trust across diverse teams and partners.
- Accountability and follow-through in meeting commitments and maintaining standards.
- Flexibility in thought and approach, able to adjust to new challenges and competing priorities.
- Coachability and a growth mindset with an openness to feedback and continuous learning.
- Initiative and self-direction in driving program results and improvements.
- A steady leadership presence that supports both people and processes.
What You Bring
We recognize that people develop skills through both formal learning and practical experience. Success in this role blends operational coordination, community collaboration, and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Career Development, Adult Education, or a related field (equivalencies considered).
- Five (5) years' experience coordinating settlement, employment, or training programs, including supervisory or mentoring responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate programs that meet funder and community needs.
- Strong understanding of labour-market trends, immigration and settlement systems, and barriers affecting newcomers with limited English proficiency.
- Proficiency with digital tools (Microsoft 365, Power BI, or similar platforms).
Preferred/Asset Qualifications
- Sector certifications such as Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP), Certified Settlement Practitioner (AAISA), or TESL/TESOL.
- Training in trauma-informed practice, intercultural communication, or non-profit leadership.
