About Bao Bei

Located in the heart of Chinatown, Bao Bei is an award-winning Chinese brasserie in business for 15 years. Known for its creative, ingredient-driven dishes, warm hospitality, and a modern approach to Chinese culinary traditions. We are a tight-knit team that values curiosity, craftsmanship, and thoughtful food rooted in culture and community.

We are seeking an inspired, hands-on Chef de Cuisine to lead our kitchen and help shape the next chapter of Bao Bei.

Position Overview

The Chef de Cuisine (CDC) is responsible for the daily kitchen operations, culinary direction, team leadership, and consistently high food quality. This role works closely with ownership and the executive team to maintain Bao Bei's standards while fostering a respectful and collaborative work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Culinary Leadership
  • Oversee all aspects of kitchen operations, food preparation, cooking, and plating
  • Lead menu development, seasonal specials, and recipe creation aligned with Bao Bei's identity
  • Maintain exceptional food quality, consistency, and presentation standards
  • Operations & Management
  • Manage scheduling, labour budgets, inventory, and COGS targets
  • Ensure kitchen systems, prep lists, and service flow run smoothly and efficiently
  • Oversee ordering, supplier relationships, and ingredient quality
  • Team Development
  • Recruit, train, and mentor cooks and kitchen staff
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and growth-oriented kitchen culture
  • Conduct regular performance feedback and training sessions
  • Food Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to all Vancouver Coastal Health regulations
  • Maintain rigorous cleanliness, sanitation, and food-safety practices

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years in a senior kitchen leadership role (Sous Chef or CDC)

Strong understanding of Chinese, Taiwanese, or pan-Asian flavours (or deep willingness to learn)

  • Experience with high-volume, quality-driven service
  • Proven leadership and team-building skills
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities
  • Passion for local ingredients, seasonal cooking, and culinary creativity
