SUMMARY OF ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Providence Living is a non-profit Catholic-sponsored health care organization focused on long-term care, assisted living, housing, and other community services to support residents and their family members. Reporting to the Director of Site Operations, the Spiritual Care Coordinator leads and develops spiritual care and mission effectiveness programs. The Coordinator works closely with managers and caregivers in the support and counselling of residents, their loved ones, and staff members.

All staff have a part to play in preventing adverse events and in promoting safety for resident and staff by being aware of and adhering to all policies and procedures including promptly reporting any risks or safety concerns relating to resident or staff safety.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Coordinates Spiritual Health services of Providence Living at The Views
  2. Assesses and provides comprehensive spiritual and emotional support through counseling and supportive presence at times of anxiety, loss, death, and other spiritual and existential distress, to inspire strength, courage and hope to residents/families according to their stated beliefs and practices.
  3. Promotes the on-going spiritual well-being of residents through listening, prayer and group support such as Memorial Services, spirituality groups, Study of Sacred text and Hymn Sing.
  4. Consistently documents in resident medical records where spiritual assessments and significant interventions are recorded to ensure other members of the interdisciplinary care team are properly informed.
  5. Is aware of the sensitivities of MAiD requests within Catholic Health and responds within these expectations, to provide support to residents and families.
  6. Under the direction of the Director of Site Operations, the provision of Spiritual Health according to the Mission, Philosophy and Objectives of Providence Living at The Views by:

    1. Providing regular support to residents, families, and staff
    2. Coordinating the local community spiritual and religious leaders (ie. priests, rabbis, elders, etc.) in relation to the care of their members
    3. Coordinating spiritual and religious rituals and services and "The Views" memorial services
    4. Orientating new staff to the Views and the role of Spiritual Health
    5. Facilitating and/or supporting post-crisis support groups for staff on an as needed basis
    6. Providing in-service programs and short-term counselling for staff who request this service according to need and workload. Refers staff to EFAP as needed.
    7. Coordinating the ongoing development and maintenance of the volunteer visitors' program
    8. Making appropriate referrals to individuals and agencies on the Comox Valley community
    9. Promoting good public relations on an on-going basis as necessary.
  7. Develops and maintains initiatives aimed at demonstrating appreciation and support of employees.
  8. Coordinates the development of the annual operational plan for the Spiritual Health Department for the approval by the Senior Operations Leader.
  9. All staff have a responsibility to remain aware of and report any risks or safety concerns promptly, and to follow any policies or procedures instituted to mitigate these risks. All staff have a part to play in preventing adverse events and in promoting safety for patients and staff. It is the responsibility of all staff to be aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those that relate to patient safety, staff safety and risk management.
  10. Performs any other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience

  • A relevant Master's degree in Theology, Public and Pastoral Leadership, Spiritual Practices or other relevant theological/spiritual studies from an accredited theological institution, plus Clinical Psychospiritual Education (CPE) with two advanced units, and preferably a certified spiritual health practitioner with CASC/ACSS.
  • Current membership in good standing with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).
  • Continuing good standing in a spiritual, religious or faith community affiliated with one's chosen tradition.

Skills and Abilities

  • Organizational, planning, leadership and human resource management skills to plan, direct and coordinate spiritual health care services.
  • Ability to develop effective spiritual health care policies and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, to enhance team building and maintain relationships with peers, department heads, the medical staff and the public.
  • Analytical skills to plan and evaluate services.
  • Emotional stability and good physical health.
  • Maturity and appreciation for a diversity of religious values, beliefs and practices.
  • Compassion for those in need, and understanding of support to those who suffer
  • Cooperative and resourceful in relationships with fellow workers, and able to work well as a member of a team with other professionals.
  • Ability to identify with and be sensitive to the cultural values and patterns of the persons they serve.
