Role Description

You'll build the "Brain" of Nexora, the Django backend powering our PWA for our client's platforms. This means designing APIs that serve both cloud-connected and offline scenarios, building lightweight edge services deployable on aircraft servers, and integrating with airline operational systems.

Aircraft lose satellite connectivity mid-flight. Your architecture must handle it gracefully.

This is a full-time hybrid role for a Senior Backend Engineer, based in Edmonton, AB, with the flexibility to work from home part-time.

Qualifications

What You'll Do

API Development

  • Design and implement RESTful APIs serving PWA clients across multiple IFE platforms
  • Create comprehensive OpenAPI/Swagger documentation for frontend team consumption
  • Implement WebSocket services for real-time features (crew notifications, live updates, AI chatbot)
  • Optimize API responses for bandwidth-constrained satellite connections

Edge & Offline Architecture

  • Build lightweight Docker containers deployable on aircraft head-end servers
  • Design data synchronization strategies between on-aircraft edge services and Google Cloud
  • Implement robust caching and queue mechanisms for connectivity outages
  • Ensure graceful degradation when cloud services are unreachable

Integration & Security

  • Integrate with airline operational systems (flight data, passenger authentication via PNR)
  • Implement JWT/OAuth authentication across edge and cloud environments
  • Ensure data privacy compliance (GDPR, PIPEDA)
  • Support AI/ML model serving endpoints for speech-to-text and translation features

Infrastructure

  • Deploy and manage services on Google Cloud Platform (Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub)
  • Build and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment
  • Monitor system health, optimize database performance, manage scaling

Required

Experience

  • 5+ years backend engineering
  • Production-scale Python/Django applications
  • RESTful API design with OpenAPI/Swagger documentation
  • Google Cloud Platform (Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, or equivalent)
  • Docker containerization and basic Kubernetes
  • PostgreSQL optimization and database design
  • GitLab CI/CD pipeline development

Technical Skills

  • Django REST Framework (DRF)
  • WebSocket implementation for real-time features
  • Data synchronization patterns for distributed systems
  • Security: JWT/OAuth, encryption, secure coding practices

Preferred

  • Experience with intermittent connectivity environments (IoT, mobile, aviation)
  • Go or Rust for high-performance microservices
  • GraphQL experience
  • Edge computing or on-premise deployment experience
  • Regulated industry background (Aerospace)
