Job Summary

The City of Kelowna is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Music Instructor to lead engaging, high-quality music programs for children, youth, and adults. This role is ideal for an instructor who is passionate about community recreation and enjoys teaching a variety of musical disciplines such as guitar, ukulele, and vocal performance. Programs are delivered in group lesson formats at various City recreation facilities.

Responsibilities

  • · Plan, lead, and deliver music lessons for participants of varying ages and skill levels.
  • · Create a positive, inclusive, and encouraging learning environment.
  • · Adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • · Prepare lesson plans and learning materials
  • · Ensure participant safety and uphold City of Kelowna recreation standards.
  • · Set up and maintain program equipment and spaces.
  • · Communicate effectively with participants, parents/guardians, and City staff.
  • · Model professionalism, punctuality, and strong customer service.

Qualifications

  • · Demonstrated experience teaching music to children, youth, and/or adults.
  • · Proficiency in one or more musical disciplines (e.g., guitar, ukulele, voice).
  • · Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • · Ability to manage groups and create a supportive learning atmosphere.
  • · First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • · Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Assets (Not Required)

  • · Formal music education or certification.
  • · Experience working in municipal recreation or community program settings.
  • · Ability to teach additional instruments or musical styles.
  • · Ability to offer classes throughout the year

Working Conditions

  • · Part-time, contract, or seasonal hours depending on program needs.
  • · Evening and weekend availability may be required.
  • · Work performed in recreation centres, community facilities, and program rooms.
